Yeah they play on the ignorance of the Aussie public who arent really well versed on the fight game anymore...It is basically utter garbage and nearly all of them do it.
As above, but I think even some of the commentators know nothing about international boxing either. Boxing has become very underground in Australia, no one knows ****-all about it. Even the trainers at my gym don't know what I am talking about when I talk about the current, world level fighters.
Boxing is a minority sport here. The commentators are clueless, but their audience is even more clueless, so they can get away with spouting any **** they want. They could call Danny Green the P4P best fighter of the decade, and 90% of listeners would believe them.
What I don't get is they hype up primadonnas like Green and Mundine yet warriors like Katsidis and Darchinyan get almost no coverage.
Great ****ing point. Why are the top 2 Aussie fighters, who both have fan friendly styles and personalities, less known than the joke that is Mundine? :huh
Mundine's cross from rugby to boxing, plus his father was a famous Australian boxer had something to do with Mundine's initial popularity. His villain persona keeps him there abouts. Green reminds me of Gatti or Ward in some ways. Little bit naive, not the brightest bulb in the lamps but a genuine blue collar fighter so it sits well with fans and the "aussie battler" culture. Kats is based in Thailand and Darchinyan has only fought 1 fight in Australia in the last couple of years (and that was against a journeyman). Also Chris John fights out of Australia but is Indonesian (But then again alot of asian fighters train out of Australia). Boxing coverage is a disgrace in Australia, majority of people want to see Mundine v Green II and can't understand why it'd be a problem for a junior middleweight to just jump up and face a cruiserweight.
