Spot on. Pascal always fights in spurts and he really only fights one way. He usually does very little then attempts to bull rush his opponent which against a fighter as defensively aware as Hopkins, is never going to work. Pascal is really one dimensional and Hopkins once again exposed another young rising fighters weaknesses. Dawson has all the tools to beat Pascal with ease but he doesn't have the boxing brain and discipline to do it every time. He has a very bad habit of staying in punching range and admiring his work after landing some punches and that is when Pascals bull rushes him and causes Dawson all kind of problems.
Pascal has the same problem as Jermain Taylor in my opinion, and that is that they're both soo ****ing jittery, even when not throwing punches and use so much body movement.
I think the guy will benefit from a change of trainer. What he has in his favour is his speed and athleticism, thats something to work off. But he needs to have a better fight strategy. He does waste all of his energy on a lot of movement without any decent punch output. I am sure he could have stood his ground more with Hopkins and pushed the pace, something which may have unsettled Hopkins. But He just didn't have the wind to go after 6 rounds. He was in conservation mode and looking for the home runs.
Exactly. I was expecting Pascal to fade as usual in the later rounds though. around 9 on. But the body shots Hopkins was landing were great. Very hard punches and you could see they paid dividends very early. Much earlier than it would have taken had he not worked the body. Hopkins is a damn genious. He did his homework this fight. Its a shame he couldnt get the title.
This hasn't just happened in this fight, Pascal fades when he should be overwhelming his opponents in the later rounds. Hell, Dawson almost had him out of there. Pascal has too much wasted movement in the ring and never seems relaxed. He also looks to have way too much muscle for a boxer's frame and it doesn't seem to serve him all that well. Froch would beat him again.
Hopkins hit him with murderous body shots and wore him down with clinches IMO. And this coupled with Pascal's already not so great stamina caused him to tire pretty quickly. He needs a new conditioning coach.
Bhop was landing some brutal body shots on Pascal. That probably was enough to slow him down. Plus Pascal is a fighter who likes to take some rounds off as a break(Ali was the same). I heard him say that once in a OTR radio interview. There aren't too many guys that can go all out for 12 rounds except the freaks like Calzaghe and Pacman.
Considering Pascal's workrate, (or lack there of) it makes even more alarming that he gasses in fights.
