Another thing is I like Liston's whole body of work against many different styles. Foreman never proved he could beat as many different styles as liston did. Foreman lost to Jimmy Young. Liston defeated his slick boxers in Machen and Folley.
True a young Foreman was a power fighter but had many flaws and was exposed by the 2 fighters that could box and was almost KO'd by the one-so called puncher in Lyle. Foreman had raw power but poor stamina. Thing with Foreman 2 is he showed us he could pace himself and adjust to different styles. Liston had some good wins over solid boxers. The thing that I must penalize Sonny for is the Ali fights. Did he really get KO'd in the 1st rd? by Ali, then what other fighters did Ali stop with one punch. The first fight Sonny was outclassed. What was Sonny best win? Patterson? Cleveland Williams?Machen? Foley? Did Sonny suffer from the bully syndrom? Did he lack heart? Foreman did show heart in the Lyle fight and even though in career 1 he did lose worse to Ali than Liston did, can I reward Sonny for taking a dive (which I know it to be.)
I don't see Ali - Liston I as a outclassion like many do. It was pretty close fights because both fighters had they moments, with Ali having the edge. Just my opinion...
1. Joe Louis 2. Muhammad Ali 3. Larry Holmes 4. Rocky Marciano 5. Lennox Lewis 6. George Foreman 7. Floyd Patterson 8. Sonny Liston 9. Evander Holyfield 10. Jack Johnson
I have the utmost respect for Floyd Patterson, but I don't think I can place him in my top 10.. Perhaps around 1980, he would have fit nicely in there, but with the additions of Holmes, Tyson, Holyfield, and Lewis, I don't think there's a place for him anymore.
