Perhaps also some sort of hypothetical on what he may have achieved had he not had the misfortune of running into Ali? Fluctuations as you say are bound to happen though based on what your criteria is.

 

Well, presumably that would be based on his ability as well? I can see him reigning for quite a while if he keeps in shape and Ali gets assassinated or something.. Prime-for-prime, I can see him beating Frazier and Foreman, though whether he would be able to hold onto his prime long enough to see those challengers off is another question.

Indeed. I'd say there are at least 8-odd fighters that have clearly better records than Liston, though I'm willing to look past that to an extent as I (would) rate mostly on ability and I like what I see of him. That might shoot him up to 5-6 on my hypothetical list despite a just-top-10 record.

 

A half-blind, aging Langford doesn't amount to too much in my book. McVea and Jeanette I think are over-rated to a degree. Still, he had guys like Jeff Clark and Bill Tate, so he had some depth to his resume.

Sam Langford was not half blind and aging when Wills beat him in 1914. Langford was still young then, and very very dangerous.

 

Yep. That´s why I think Liston and Patterson are close. Achievements for me wiegh more than ability. Much more.

 

Achievments wise...Liston blows patterson out of the water. Patterson got dominated in his prime multiple times. Liston never lost in his prime. Liston cleaned out all the top contenders whom patterson avoided. He also cleaned patterson's clock TWICE.

 

He was dominated 4 times by two fighters. Once by a guy who just had his number and once by probably the greatest hw ever when he was injured and/or old. Hardly something to be ashamed of.
Patterson is the youngest hw champ, the first to regain the title, fought nearly always bigger man and was competative with the best despite beeing old and small.

 

Liston dominated his era much better then patterson, beat contenders that Liston avoided, and Liston never was owned by a guy like Ingemar. Plus Liston would beat Floyd anyday. Liston ranks much higher then Patterson, acheivement wise, or H2H.

Anyone who has Joe Louis at number one should slap the sh*t out of themselves. It isn't bases solely on title reign. How about head to head? Could Louis really have beaten Muhammad Ali, Larry Holmes, Lennox Lewis, Mike Tyson, Wladimir Klitschko, Vitali Klitschko, Evander Holyfield, George Foreman, Sonny Liston, etc. Now, maybe he could have beaten a few of the names mentioned, but anyone of you who won't at least consider that Louis could lose to these guys in a head to head clash needs to have their head examined. Seriously, you must be a BLIND Louis fan if you think he was THAT good. Louis is an all-time great heavweight, but is VERY overrated. Period.

 

I think he would have a good chance with nearly all of those fighters.

And furthermore, head to head is only one factor of many I include in my assessments.
