yeah people forget lewis took all that time and talked about fighting a lot of guys before finally retiring. also, i don't remember much talk of retirement before vitaly (but there could've been) and lewis looked good as always leading up to that fight albeit he didn't look in the best of shape vs vitaly.

ok maybe I just don't get what some of you guys are saying but correct me if I'm wrong... Did LL retire the UNDISPUTED champ? Didn't he get the W against Vitali? Didn't he beat EVERYONE he stepped in a ring with (meaning losses were avenged) No elaborate excuses... a yes or no will suffice for an answer.

No I can talk now. Nothing was mentioned about level of competition or number of fights. Simply who has the higher KO ratio. IF we are going to take something like number of fights or level of comp into consideration I can pick Vitali apart the same way you just picked valero apart.

Yes, Lewis exercised his legitimate right not to grant Vitaly a rematch and retired as the champ.

Better off bringing up Oscar V Sturm, thats when the hypocrisy, spin and nut-hugging really gets out of control.

Quitting when up by a big margin on the scorecards.

There is another nut who pulls this off flawlessly. Can you guess who?

Hint: He is also of Euro origin.

EVERYONE took Vitali lightly!
He was still known as "Wlad's not-quite-as-good brother" at the time.

Lennox took the fight on 12 days notice or whatever it was, so obviously he took Vitali more lightly than he should.

And it's not even about that anyway - the problem was that he took KIRK JOHNSON lightly, and didn't give himself enough time to adjust his conditioning or gameplan. That's his own fault for being arrogant and overconfident, but it's still the truth.

And he wanted the rematch with Rahman because he lost! So it's not even the same situation.

I agree that he probably retired because the first fight made him realize that he wasn't still in his prime like he wanted to believe beforehand.
I have said before that I'd pick Vitali in a rematch. But so what? A victory for Vitali would only prove that he was better than a 40-ish Lennox. Big deal. A lot of the other opponents Lennox beat in his career could have beaten a 40-ish Lennox. In fact a lot of them would have found a way to beat the Lennox that Vitali lost to.

So it really was down to age and diminishing skills. But it took a struggle in a fight that he would have won easily in his prime to make him see it. I believe Kirk would have made that version of Lennox struggle as well (unless he came in grossly out of shape like he was against Vitali). Sure, he would have lost like Vitali did, but Lennox would have realized it was time to give it up no matter who the opponent was that night.

Ture, but Lewis said he woudl give the re-match. He talked up a storm. There was 15-18 million on the table for him. The WBC ordered the re-match, and guess what, Lewis knew better.

So perhaps retiring Lewis would be an option in this thread as well?

Lewis explains retirement
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A1XcFbLCjjA
....................................................................

He was 38, won everything, done it all, he always refused to get marrie dor have kids while focusing on his career, as soon as he retire dhe got married and babies followed quickly. He lost desire for boxing after achieving his goals and other things became important.

Lewis talked about retiring from the moment he won the Undisputed title against Holyfield in 99, the only reason he didnt was because he knew people would always say he didnt fight Tyson. Tyson then called him out with the famous "eat your children" tirade.
After his 2002 fight with Tyson he declared mission complete after beating what he called the last fighter from his era that needed to be beaten. To him the Klitschko`s were the next era. The only reason he didnt retire after Tyson was because Tyson asked for a rematch which Lewis was contractually obliged to give him. He waited a year and setup a tune up fight against Johnson as adouble header with Tyson fighting in the co-main event to build up to the rematch. Tyson, then decided he didnt want the rematch after all despite signing an amendment to the contract so as to appear on the LA card. They brought Klitschko onto the bill instead on the undercard and signed to face him next after this event so as to build up the promotion. Then Johnson pulled out and Klitschko moved to the main event.
Lewis took the fight on short money so as to fill the date and save the promotion that his company had already setup.

Klit had his chance and didnt take it, Lewis, as after the Tyson fight didnt feel any motivation, like he had said a year earlier, his mission was complete and it was up to the next era to carve their own path.

He could keep on fighting forever, he said there would always be another guy calling him out and it was like a drug meaning he would be stuck in the sport like Holyfield.

You mean against a totally shot Mike Tyson who staggered Lewis in the first round? Or perhaps it was a couple fights earlier when he was KO'd by Hasim Rahman. I don't know. Lewis was still competitive and possibly still the best heavyweight in the world, but that doesn't always mean that a champion is in his prime. It wouldn't have taken an all time great to be the best fighter in the world in 2003. Lewis was probably at his peak between maybe 1997-2000. Look at the way he was totally demolishing guys like Briggs, Golata and Grant. He had the benefit of not being aged too badly and had seasoned quite nicely with Steward in his corner. This was probably the best version of Lewis. By 2003, he had noticeably declined. And what difference does it make? Vitali couldn't beat him anyway, and given Wlad had just gotten smoked by Corrie Sanders, I wouldn't have picked him against this version of Lewis either.

Vitlai is coming back to claim the WBC title belt. Rhaman does not have it, Peter does. Peter > Rahman.

As for Lewis, face it, he wanted no part of a re-match what so ever. He knew he was lucky in the first fight.

I see the usual suspects who dislike Vitlai are here. This is fine with me. I was most interested in the poll, and by the looks of it, the participation was higher then I expected.
