Why? I think that is rather impressive. Especially considering that he shared the ring with Lennox Lewis, and was doubling him on the scorecards.

No, I don't think that everyone here feels that every champion in the last 50 years was better than both Klitschkos, at least I certainly don't. I also don't feel that as though the divsion sucked just when the Klitschkos came around. It was declining quite noticably in the last 4 years of Lewis's reign.

As for the current state of the division, I think its pretty bad, but seems to be looking up a tad. With some of these guys finally trying to unify, plus a few young prospects coming up, the heavyweight picture may be a better place in two or three years. Wlad is a good fighter, but his list of wins over quality comp is rather thin in my opinion. No, not everyone he fought was or is a bum, but he's faced a rather large number of has beens or never were's. He also has three very bad KO losses to men who range from mediocre to decent.

If he's going to prove himself as worthy of being mentioned in the same breath as Louis, Tyson, Holmes or Ali, he's going to have to step up the comp and stay unbeaten for a long time. That's not an unfair assessment.

Lewis' reign only lasted 3 1/2 years. Not even a full 3 1/2 because not only did he dodge two #1 contenders, he also was knocked out by Rahman in that time. So, in other words... it was bad during his entire reign?

Ya I suppose..too bad he lost the fight. At least he collected some might fine stats to go along with that TKO.

Vitali has great balance for a big man, is agile and has amazing core strength. He is hard to hit solidly and knows hiw to turn a fighters balance or lack of against themself.. (like with Danny Williams) Against Lennox it was a bit different , although old , Lewis was still the most tenacious heavyweight in years and it was always gonna be tough and very uphill.. I do think Lewis was starting to catch Vitali purely because of Lennox's amazing technique, but to be holding his own up to the stoppage was very gallant.. Vitali is still one of the strongest heavyweight in history.. I think many underestimate him, IMO , he would have lost to Lewis as the fight progressed but was the man who made Lewis realise he was not what he used to be and it convinced him to hang up his gloves.. A very good heavyweight.. No frills and a better chin than his brother, no doubt..

How can Wlad step up the comp? He has been beating all of the best guys in the division. He is ranked #1, he already beat the #2, and he already beat the previous #1 to become #1 himself. It's a robbery that he doesn't have the ring belt right now. Especially considering that beyond that, he has unified titles against an undefeated Champion, beat America's undefeated top contender, beat his number one challenger, and got revenge against Brewster.

Every fight that Wlad has been in since Peter was a very meaningful fight. They were all top contenders too. Austin was his weakest opponent but it was a mandatory. Hell, even Austin hadn't lost in 7 years before that fight.

it does not make me feel any better or any worse. We are talking cold hard facts.

Put your emotions aside for a second. Vitali Klitschko has never been knocked down in the ring.

    FACT

    no ifs, ands, or buts.

I'm not saying he has never lost a fight. I'm am saying that the FACT that he has never been knocked down in his career is quite impressive, although i admit that his opposition was not stellar, it is still impressive.

Noone has been able to knock Vitali down.

You are the one rationalising, not me.

Judging by the crowd reaction, and fans around the world (other than strong Lewis backers).... Vitali got more respect for that fight than Lennox did. Lewis' status took a hit, and Vitali's went through the roof. Of course, Lennox retired and now he is bronzed and worshiped. Vitali is still dabbling with coming back so he gets the same shitty treatment as every other current fighter.

Sad by true. I think Lewis should have received far more respect for being a fighter of Vitali's quality than he did. I doubt many, if any, 36 year old Champions would have won that fight. Vitali deserved all kinds of props..he fought like a warrior, as did Lewis.

Lewis regained the WBC in February of 1997 and steadily acquired two other titles until losing to Rahman in April of 2001. Thats over 4 years alone. He then regained the belt in that same year and kept it until 2003. That says nothing of the fact that he held the WBC from 1993-1994. So your ascertion that he held it less than 31/2 years is incorrect.

I think its fair to say that from about 1999-2006, the division sucked balls, and even now is just begining to recover.

Louis, Tyson and Holmes fought some bad fighters, true, but they also fought some very good guys, and did not have as many defeats to mediocre fighters like Wlad did. Tyson unified the heavyweight title, was undefeated through 37 pro fights, and was the youngest heavyweight champion in history. While you may not think that his comp was great ( and it wasn't ) Beating Michael Spinks, Trevor Berbick, pinklon Thomas, Tony Tucker and Razor Ruddock is arguably a better list than many of the fighters that Wlad fought in my opinion.
