what is wrong with the middleweight division

What's wrong with the MW division is the same that's wrong with most of the divisions, certainly if there's a guy in it that seems to be clearly the best and isn't from one of the US, Mexico, UK and such.

We all know the Rigo issue... is any big name SBW going to face him? NO! And face eachother? NO!
Then there's the crap going on at WW. Maybe the strongest division out there, but the strongest 2 aren't going to fight eachother if the fate of the world depended on it.
This thread about MW says it all. One guy that trashes his competition, and a 'champion' that clearly isn't the best at the weight.
Super Middle is nice, but also very very weird now.
Ward is the champ, but seems to be a low level journeyman when it comes to courtroom battles, wich he seems to prefer anyway.
Froch is the guy who impresses the most, but after the S6 smoke cleared we still have many beltholders like Anthony Dirrell, AA (again!) and Tommy Oosthuizen... not fighting eachother of course.
LHW. If it wasn't for a old timer like Hopkins, Kovalev would have been stuck in the same limbo as Golovkin, not getting the big fights just because he's too damn good and dangerous. And we probably wouldn't have had any of the beltholders fighting eachother.
Cruiser. The champion in that division has clearly shown not to be the best either, but the beltholders almost never fight eachother there also.
