watched katsidis v earl last night, was a great battle. also 2 truely outstanding fights that fly under the radar because of the tragic consequences are benn v mcclellan eubank v watson 2 11th round of eubank v watson 2 is ****in epic :deal
hearns fought a great fight in that rematch, don't like rewatching it much cos i thought hearns edged it. hearns had no chin but he was so ****in gutsy and entertaining to watch, probably the best offensive fighter i've ever seen.
Leonard is arguably my favourite fighter ever, so im probably a very bad judge, but watching live (On a school night) I felt a draw was fair. Its really due to nostalgia as to why I like that fight so much. Leonards career excited me more towards the end with his fights with Hagler and Hearns 2. I sat up all night for that dull Leonard/Duran 3 fight atsch. You're right about Hearns. His chin wasnt great but he could often put up a real gutsy effort where his skills and instinct kept him in there
Benn/McClellan was a real epic, but as you note, the sad ending to such a great fight (as with Eubank/Watson) does seem to tarnish the memory and stop the fight being as widely recognised. Benn/McClellan was an amazing war
Duran v Iran Barkley Duran was way past his prime and up against a very big MW in Barkley who was at his peak - it was a fantastic fight and when the aging duran dropped barkley in the 11th for many of his life long fans it was like a 10th round douglas in tokyo moment. Durans last great night - against an often overlooked fighter in Barkley who helped make an often forgotten great fight , nip and tuck all the way with Duran pulling out a 115 to 113 is how I had it .
you'll not find a better round in boxing ever for high drama , courage , heart and tragedy with jaw dropping amazement , that round goes beyond boxing , its something else entirely.
Favourite fight at the moment, as it changes, is Hagler - Mugabi. Favourite fighter (Hagler) in a brutal war with The Beast 26 fights 26 KO's.
think your probably a bit older than me bailey cos i've got a similar viewpoint with leonard and i sat up all night as 10/14 year old watching those fights. leonard was my hero and i managed to score hearns v leonard 2 a draw at the time but in hindsight i think it was probably with tinted glasses, giving leonard 10-8 rounds in the 12th and think it was the 5th as well. still got all those leonard fights on video tape from when they happenned and i haven't watched them for years now. got leonards career set on dvd now, so might re-watch them in a minute.
thats another one of my favourite fights, hagler coming up against a young fighter who thought he was indestructable and haglers will to win slowly winning over.
totally agree, eubank was on the verge of defeat for the 1st time and that uppercutt he threw was eubank in the last chance saloon - what a round and what tragic consequences. watching watson come out for round 12 on shakey legs is one of the saddest sights i've ever seen in a boxing ring.
benn v mcclellan was as brutal as it gets. benns victory was one of thee great performances of the last 25 years imo. to this day i think if mccllelan hadn't met benn, he could have gone on to achieve great things.
Gatti - Ward 1 (With round 9 being arguably the best round ever) Morales vs Barrera 1 Morales vs Pacquiao 1 Honorable mentions (fights I really enjoyed) - Ali vs Fraizer 1 - The fight of the century - Trinidad vs Mayorga - Hatton vs Tyszu - Burns vs Martinez - Froch vs Pascal
