Interviewer: "I saw Sonny Liston this morning" Ali: "Aint he ugly!!" "he`s too ugly to be the World Champ, the World Champ should be pretty like me"..
Hey Unforgiven, the interviewer (name escapes me) is in a tussle with various entourage and press so the sound goes a little quiet as he waves the mike about but I'm pretty sure that's what he says. I can't yet put up links but I'm sure there are numerous places on youtube or wherever to hear it. It's just after his initial "I shook up the world" rant at the start of the post fight interview.
Ahhh, just watched it again, got confused it's just after he is asked for his poetry. He says: He wanted to go to heaven, so I took him in 7.... I'm pretty.....I shook up the world. You must listen to me. I am the Devil....." I was shocked when I heard it too! Someone called "Muhammad Ali Fan" has it up on YouTube.
He still denies saying he was the other fellah to Joe Frazier. "I'm so fast that last night I turned off the light switch in my hotel room and I was in bed before the room was dark"
In the zaire fight...as foreman lay on him tired at the back end of round 7...."George this is the wrong place to get tired cos i aint started yet"
I think you're right, he says it ! Funny, because a little before that he's saying "I talk to God every day"
"Howard Cosell, you said i ain't got no chance, there's no way im going to win, all ive got is a prayer?, well chump all i need is a prayer, because when that prayer reaches the right person, not only will George Foreman fall but MOUNTAINS will fall" Powerful
That is actually just a variation of a quote he took from the negro league baseball player Josh Gibson referring to how fast Cool Papa Bell was in his playing days.
Sorry Baclava, I think the 'poem' was : Me? Oui! As in the French.... You're quite right 'Unforgiven', a strange thing to say, I suppose it must be such a 'high' to KO the undefeatable monster at 7-1 odds that you feel on top of the world. I don't think Ali/Clay meant anything anti-Christian by it (even though he was into fundamentalist Islam by then), more an extension of 'I'm a bad man' etc.
