My favorite is when Ali is called in to a NY congressional meeting in an attempt to ban boxing in the State of New York. The congressman ask " Don't you think it's fishy that all your fights have ended in the exact round that you have predicted". In classic Ali form he says " I just tell everyone I'm the greatest will it be a fix when Doug Jones falls in Six".
"Vernon Clay..........Clay ? HE might be good" Muhammad talking about George Foreman's opponents prior to RITJ
Maybe you don't know much about Islam, but I'm pretty sure "The Devil" is just as offensive to muslims as it is to Christians. In fact, they believe in the same stuff, more or less. Ali wasn't a proper 'fundamentalist' or 'orthodox' muslim at all though back then. In those days he was a member of the "NATION OF ISLAM" or "Black muslims" ... a black separatist cult movement who really have nothing much to do with real Islam - in fact, they are considered thoroughly blasphemers to real muslims because they believe some con-man dude in the 1930s who went around saying he was God ... and some other dude (Elijah Muhammad, lived until the 1970s) who said he was God's prophet. Strangely enough, they also believed that white people were "Devils", so maybe Ali was saying he's white !
Yeah, that was a good one. Another thing I remember about that - one of the names he mentioned before Vernon Clay , in an effort to show how protected Foreman had been, was "Chuck Wepner. A nobody" .... ironic, seeing as Ali's very next fight was against that same guy !
