I've heard from a couple of sources now that the Mikkel Kessler vs. Carl Froch fight should be considered a Fight of the Year candidate, and I wasn't sure if I agreed. I thought the fight was good, but nothing special, since I thought Kessler was a couple of notches better than Froch and deserved a UD. But now that I think about it, it my be the best fight I've seen this year. Most fights that I was excited about have turned out to interesting, but one-sided... or even weird, like Williams vs. Cintron. Has it been a poor year? Have I just been watching the wrong fights? If I've been watching the wrong ones, what fight SHOULD I have watched? (Oh, and please: no super obscure fights. I'm not interested in how exciting the fight between your seven year old sister and the neighbor's dog Lucifer was, or Mr. Smith vs Mr. Whatshisface in front of a paying audience of 15).
Well... that was one of the incredibly one-sided fights I was thinking of. Never found that one really exciting enough to be a FOTY candidate.
Yeah I found that a pretty entertaining fight. Martinez starts really well, giving Kelly a few problems. The tide then changes as Kelly makes a few changes, and Martinez loses a bit of momentum. Then BANG! a left hand (?) opens a horrible cut on Kelly's eye, and Martinez begins pounding his face in for the remainder of the fight. Good stuff :happy But in all honesty, this year so far has been pants! Loads of great match-ups, but all failing to live up to their hype. And to think, this time last year we had the following: - Mosley/Margarito (all be it, abit too one sided) - Clottey/Cotto - JMM/Diaz - Froch/Taylor - Berto/Collazo All of the above have pissed on the fights we've had so far in 2010 Edit: Oh and as for Froch/Kessler, two men slumping around the ring like drunks doesn't do it for me. But yeah, I suppose it's been the best of a bad bunch
I enjoyed PBF v SSM that was great to watch. Haye v Ruiz was good and i enjoyed Ortiz v Campbell last night. Maybe i like seeing people on the decline, must be a guilty pleasure.
Without a doubt Money vs. Mosley. It had everything you could ask for in a mega fight. Action, grit, glamour, star power (i.e. Money), superb boxing skill by the superior fighter, etc. On the other hand, worst fight of the year was the shitfest PacGwire/Clottie.
I know I'm probably the only one, but my favorite fight of the year so far was Daniel Estrada vs. Angel Alirio Rivero. Not a high level of skill involved, but boy was it a war, and one of the best displays of heart I've ever seen. A couple of other fights worth watching that haven't been mentioned yet are Antonio Escalante vs. Mickey Roman, and Carlos Tamara vs. Brian Viloria.
