Was he a great fighter? Could he have done more? Was he at the limits of his ability? Could he have beaten Lewis on another night?

Waste of talent IMO. He may not have any big wins, bit you can tell just by watching him vs Bowe and Byrd, that he was genuinely, an extremely good fighter.

Very good jab, decent power, huge physically, very strong, ridiculous workrate and when he got going, a decent chin. His weaknesses were that he had an extremely bad tendancy to be caught cold. He also had a pretty ass defence and didn't always have heart. He did some times, but he didn't others. He was always hyper-aggressive though, and is involved in the greatest HW fight ever IMO.

That hyper aggression made him one of the most entertaining HWs of the 90s. The fact that he was also a POS makes the Tyson, Lewis & Brewster fights fun too.

Total headcase with a lot of raw talent that could blow hot and cold. If he could have been more disciplined, his career might have been much better.

When you say POS, are you referring to him outside of the ring, inside of it, or both? Have you heard any stories about his behavior?

I heard he shot/stabbed someone in a bar fight in Poland. That's why he fled to the US.

Oh, yeah so he actually assaulted a guy in a bar in Wloclawek, Poland, and supposedly stole some of the guys clothes after. Then, yes, right after this fled to America and became a prizefighter. Crazy story.

A good fighter that should have held a version of a title.

He had uncommon ability. 6-4 230lbs quick hands, put together combinations fluidly. Sweet jab, always finished with the lefthook. Good power, he didnt load up because he was a boxer not a slugger. The power came naturally. Pretty good chin. He had more ability than both Klits. Physically.

Mentally he had severe anxiety, panic attacks. Not suited for boxing.

One dirty SOB, I don't care for him. At his best he had good form and was a plus athlete with good, but not great power.

A quality post...id agree with all except the pos bit....i think essentially golota, was a shy socially awkward man lacking confidence....and this spilled over into his either losing his equilibrium or having random panic attacks.....which caused him to seemingly inexplicably throw away fights he had won.....eg grant ,and the bowe ones ....he stayed at the very top of the hw division for 10 tumultuous years.....and was slightly unlucky in a few of his title shots and shouldve won a title

Golata is the type of fighter that had all the physical tools to be a long-standing champion. I could be wrong, but it seems that his childhood haunted him. He is the type who needed a father figure type trainer like Cus from an early age.
