What is your opinion of Buddy McGirt as a trainer?

If a fighter already has a good jab than most of his job is done because he is only going to tell them “jab baby, jab”

 

He took away Kovalev's RH, one of the biggest weapons in boxing, and tried to make him box like an amateur, but for 12 rounds at the age of 36.
He's clearly an utter moron.
Now Kovalev is fighting at cruiser, way undersized, with only a jab.
It's like a practical joke played on him by Duva, but it's real.

He's probably largely responsible for getting Kovalev KO'd against Canelo too. If you listen to Kovalev, he mentions how he had no energy in the fight and was spent at the end. Yeah, because he's trying to point fight for 12 rounds at 36 and his training was clearly highly endurance based, throwing a crazy amount of jabs in camp according to him. He needed to sit down on his RH and blast Canelo out of there, at least get him running like in GGG I. Canelo was worried about the power at first, but then realised he was just facing a jab.

 

First of all, Buddy McGirt has more boxing knowledge in his pinky toenail than I have in total. He was an excellent fighter, but doesn't seem to have fulfilled his potential as a trainer.

To be honest though, a fighter must listen to his trainer's instructions in the first place during the fight. For instance, when Antonio Tarver fought Bernard Hopkins, McGirt continually advised Tarver to jab & double jab but Antonio was not listening and would not throw the job the way he was instructed. What can the trainer do but continue to tell his fighter to jab, baby?

 

I dunno if he is complete moron like you said, it might be the death of his fighter Dadashev in July 2019 wrecked him pretty hard, so he is teaching since then this "cautios jab" style

 

his role in life is to put shot fighters on the path to squeeze out one more payday. he’s pretty good at that.

That change in style wasn´t implemented for Canelo. It was done after the first Eleider fight.
And the reasoning was solid: Your stamina is letting you down. You have the power, you don´t need to put weight behind every shot. And Kovalev was an explosive fighter during his younger days, so it makes sense he would rely more on his jab as he ages.

And when Kovalev did try to let his right hand go vs Canelo, he often got countered as Canelo was very weary of that shot. Plus it makes sense to use your jab to keep smaller man like Canelo at bay while occupying his high guard.
And the gameplan worked until the 11th.

He's a great trainer, but like any great trainer he isn't a miracle worker.

 

You're literally the first person who broke down correctly what happened in the Canelo Kovalev fight. Most say it was a dive and that kovi was only there for the pay check. Kudos to you man for keeping it real
