Is Tyson Fury a serious HW contender or is he a joke?

    Both:

A "serious" HW contender because of the state of the division, hype and promtional gimmicks

A joke because his act amounts to a circus sideshow, he shows signs of mental instability and he has become annoyingly hypicritical

Valuev was a better boxer and is a better man.

He never bashed and ridiculed great fighters like Lennox.

he sucks. obviously hes big enough to cause mayhem in lower echelons, and has just about enough to edge out good journeymen like chisora. But not a world class operator. still young enough to become one but I don't think he has the character or class to grow.

in a division where the champion can regularly defend against unskilled fatboys without his deluded fanboys noticing, Tysons hand is artificially inflated to that of a serious contender, whereas in other eras he'd be a decent journeyman.

Fury is a typical "would could he be" and "what is he really" type of fighter.

If he was focused, had professional management, disciplined, hard-working, competitive, hungry -- then he'd be a legit contender that would get people excited.

The reality however is different. Fury seems to gain about 40 lbs in-between fights, he lacks focus, appears undisciplined in training, has his family managing him (who do a horrific job with his career management). Fury shows very little ring IQ and discipline even against journeyman opposition, often allowing them to wobble him and make him look bad.

At this point, what Fury needs is a devastating loss so he can find his focus. Then he has to fire his family trainers and managers. Then take a break, find the hunger and drive to want to become champion of the world. Then surround himself with a professional team that can help him make it happen. Then - maybe! - he has a chance.

Valuev had a granite chin. He took punches that would kill Fury.
