Some of you know I'm not a fan of his persona. Pink robes and trunks, stupid glasses, stupid dancing etc. Even worse than that is that ridiculous expression on his face even when he's fighting, and his corny lines, asking people to brush his hair. Still worse is his style when he's being interviewed. "well you know...". BUT, I can't let my dislike of the guy cloud my judgement of him as a fighter. Maybe in the past I've let my dislike of the guy affect my judgement. Being honest, this guy might be a clown outside the ring, but as a fighter he's a special talent. He can fight on the outside, he can fight even better inside. Fast hands, decent power, doesn't get hit a lot, nice counter punching with a good variety of shots-hooks, uppercuts, straight punches. The guy also seems very very calm and composed. His footwork is a little strange, but seeing as his feet are usually planted he gets good power in his punches. Not an explosive puncher but they are thudding punches and very accurate. So I'm asking 3 things here. 1. Your general opinion of him as a fighter 2. Who do you think he would beat/lose to from 135-140? 3. How far do you think he will go in the sport? I'll start. I think the hype and the comparisons with Floyd Mayweather are justified. I think he's absolutely the real deal. I think he beats Burns, and he beats a lot of guys at 140 once he steps up. Brandon Rios would get ****ed up by Broner. He might have a great chin but there's only so much punishment it can take before it cracks, and Broner would happily fight on the inside against a guy that likes to block punches with his face. Khan gets beat also. This guy is gonna be a huge star I think. Not the most exciting style, and he will look bad against certain types of fighters, but it won't matter too much as long as he keeps winning. I don't know if he's really in love with himself or if he's just created that clown persona to make people hate him and pay to see him get beat, but again it doesn't really matter. I can see him getting to the top and becoming an elite fighter.
Good fighter. Don't quite buy him as the best thing since the wheel yet like many other people do. Needs to be given a genuine elite opponent to fight, DeMarco was always overrated. If he ever does fight Burns and beats him then I will start believing that he's special. Right now though? he's just another product of Golden Boy's hype machine in my opinion. Absolute **** in terms of his personality. Love it if he got KO'ed. Will it ever happen though? Who knows?
He's not a special talent, this is getting to DeGale levels of delusion. He's a decent fighter, fringe world-class against certain types of opponent, but has lost twice (even if not officially) to guys who gave him angles and popped a consistent jab. So, while he can look pretty special smashing up the DeMarcos of the world, I think he'll fall short against the more skilled guys. At 135, Burns beats him, IMO, and Vazquez has a good chance and Abril could easily mess him around, but likely wouldn't get the decision. At 140, his chances deteriorate: Marquez takes him to pieces, so does Matthysse (but in a much more competitive manner), and I bet Khan could probably take him with some discipline (haha). However, he'd do well with Rios, even though I think he'd struggle to take Brandon's pressure.
Talented fighter, I think a fighter who's been trying to find his indentity and is slowly getting there. He's a good athlete, Got his weaknesses which make him beatable (human at end of day) but he's developed in the last 2 years nicely and is growing as a fighter which means it may be best to strike while iron is hot in terms of fighting him. I think 140 him vs Garcia is a hell ova fight!. Both guys developing into fully established world class world champions. He's got lot of questions to be asked still so tough to say who he loses to but don't see the guys at 135lbs doing it. Think it's going to take a guy with a bit of everything to beat him. I think he will earn well and win another title at another weight. So far as far can be ..
I have to be honest, i thought the job he done on De Marco was pretty ****ing destructive, how far can he go? I'm not sure, but he has certainly announced his credentials as a world class fighter at the least!
But why was the DeMarco win so notable? Lovely bloke, but was soundly outclassed by Linares up until the stoppage and Valero, with slower hands and a smaller stature, absolutely took Antonio to school. He wasn't up to much, but was a really solid win at 135.
On paper at least he's nowhere near his peak, and this is why the times he hasn't looked good can be excused somewhat (excused may not be the best word but you know what I mean). He's not the finished product, but with time and more experience I see him getting to the top. Like I said, he's not gonna look too hot against certain styles of fighters but he's no one dimensional fighter so he'll still find a way to win.
I'd agree with that except that his footwork is awful. Has he actually improved? Not really, IMO. He's been very carefully matched (and that was why he nearly got upset by Ponce De Leon) to face guys that won't force him to reset.
I don't rate him as highly as some do. I think he's far more likely to end up similar to an Andre Berto or Devon Alexander, rather than a Mayweather or Jones. He's a solid fighter but he'll need to improve a lot to fulfill the hype people are giving him.
Broner's a talented guy with a big personality, I think he'll be a major star but he does have glaring weaknesses - Flat feet, Broner is rarely up on his toes & this affects his overall mobility - Very wide stance, good for adding purchase to his punches but along with his flat feet restricts his movement - Relatively average reflexes & defensive radar, his shell defence can be rather porous from range Broner will struggle against lateral movement, speed & a good jab, especially as he moves up in weight & his physical advantages decrease. I'd love to see him vs Abril, that would be an impressive win if he pulled it off.
The obvious worry with Burns against him is Ricky's relative lack of power. I don't think he'll have much grief landing his jab, but there's not a lot else to stop Broner simply attempting to walk him down if he's having any trouble.
