Oh..........well despite losing Sanchez that year, I think 1982. That was the year of Chacon-Limon IV, which has been my favorite fight for many years now, as well as Gomez-Pintor and Pryor-Arguello I. Also among the great fights was Sanchez-Nelson in the champion's swansong.

It also had what was at the time the biggest superfight in history with Holmes-Cooney. That fight was huge on many levels.

It was a huge year for boxing.

 

It really is.

 

I think quality of suds has an inversely proportionate relationship to professionalism of graphic design marketing.

Budweiser? Amazing logo, **** beer.

Corona? Up there (but not quite as impressive), also **** (but not quite as bad).

Tecate? Grade school effort in branding, but a moderately decent import.

Dos Equis? Sheer laziness, two big X's - but preferable to its compadres.

Negra Modelo/Especial? Nothing but a damn ribbon? (and not even that, for Especial - just some plain & cursive writing) - but the p4p best of the bunch from Mexico.


I'd say the mold breaker is Stella Artois. Decent pilsner, if a little boring. Their coat of arms is classy enough, but nothing dazzling.

 

See, I like a Corona that hasn't been too subject to light or heat; the clear bottles make it skunky if it's left out, but otherwise they're pretty good. Heineken is the same way. Totally agree on the Modelo Especial; that's damn fine beer.

I'm 61 and would have to say three periods.
As an eight/nine year old in 61-62 watching the Gillette Friday niters, and having dad take me to the barber shop and finding a Ring Magazine on the table to read. We knew all the contenders and all the champions. Dad let me stay up late on Friday's to watch the fights. (Patterson became my hero at this time) I think we saw the Griffith-Paret III fight tho we didn't know Bennie's condition afterwards. :verysad
The Heavyweight Elimination tourney in 67-68. It was an exciting event at the time; all my buds and I were fired up. Frazier wasn't a part of it but you knew the winner would face him eventually.
Basically the entire 70's; lot's of big names fighting big fights. Most of them were on network TV, tho we went to numerous closed circuit telecasts when they weren't.
Oh, one other thing. From, roughly, 65-74 ABC's Wide World of Sports seemed to always have a Championship bout on Saturday afternoon, BIG time guys in all the divisions.
I miss the old days; sadly I can't even enjoy boxing now with 5-6 'champs' in each division, with a new division every 3-4 pounds, and 40-50 'top ten contenders'. atsch

1987

A prime Mike Tyson unifies the Heavyweight title and the talk begins on who can even challenge him, let alone beat him.

Julio Cesar Chavez vs Edwin Rosario. A lightweight superfight. Rosario was actually favoured by many as being too big and hard hitting for Chavez who was moving up in weight but this really showed what a special fighter Chavez was as he dominated the man thought to be one of the most feared fighters at the time.

Sugar Ray Leonard vs Marvin Hagler. A few years too late maybe but still a much anticipated event as the comeback of Sugar Ray resulted in a big upset and the end of an era as the great Hagler never fought again.

Evander Holyfield begins his domination of the Cruiserweights leading to talk that he could be the one to one day become the biggest threat to Mike Tyson's heavyweight reign.

Mike McCallum vs Donald Curry. A spectacular knockout by the underrated McCallum which sadly put an end to any talk of Curry being destined to become one of boxings all time greats.

 

Just thought of something.
Maybe there should be a "Cruiser Classic" forum. Seems like so many posts in 'Classic' refer to 80's-90's bouts that IMO can hardly be referred to as 'Classic'.
