He's one of the richest active boxers currently. He fights 2-3 times a year. He's 31. His wife Is beautiful. He's ginger. He probably carries a massive weapon between his legs.

What keeps him motivated to still fight? Legacy? More Money? Mexican Beef?

Fighters like AJ and Fury fight 1-2 times a year and their motivation has certainty dropped since they gained vast wealth. (Based on interviews and fight history and In ring performances)

AJ is not a fighter he is a brand... an athlete who happens to box and boxes well. Everything AJ does or doesn't do is a business decision. AJ is not a fighter.

Canelo is also a brand, however Canelo boxes often because his matches are low risk. Carefully scouted opponents get selected, then Team Canelo breaks them down with catch weights, rehydration clauses, short camps etc etc, while Canelo himself cycles clenbuterol. By the time the match happens, Canelo isn't facing a true threat. I call Canelo a brand because true fighters don't use that above mentioned nonsense.

A true fighter fights often because that's who they are at their core and they need an outlet for it. True fighters fight because it is simply what they enjoy doing.

I don't know why he is this way, but I believe it's why he was chosen to get all this promotional/network/sanctioning weight behind him.

I can't imagine they were scouring Mexico for the next short, ginger, no charm, no flash, moderate power, counterpunching style fighter to turn into a superstar.

They found someone who wants to do big thing after big thing, even if he is strategic about which big thing he does.

Ultimately a lot of guys are taking steroids and getting friendly judging and they still fight one scrub every 9 months. Canelo won me over in the past few years by taking on some challenges when he didn't need to and pushing forward when all the top tier fighters were hanging back.

I really wouldn’t consider AJ and Canelo brands. I see why you say that, but no. Losses and controversies aside, they seem to take on more risk/challenges than most these days.

I’d put guys like Wilder, Davis, and Ruiz in the brand category

He likes boxing, he wants a legacy, he wants to represent his country, he wants to challenge himself, inspiring people, influencing politics, generational wealth etc.

This question always confuses me, it implies that being rich is the only goal in life. I doubt that anyone who is successful at anything does it for money, and I doubt that anyone who makes some money decides that’s it once they’re comfortable. Money isn’t a good motivator unless you have none.

Canelo is still in the game because he has the goal of one day winning a major fight without PEDs. It's his dream.

I'll say one thing - there's absolute no legacy for Canelo.

If he was concerned about legacy he and his team wouldnt:
    -fix fights
    -stack the deck
-take fights at the maximally opportune time
    -buy judges

The reason he and his team do the above is because they know he is not that good and have zero confidence he can beat prime opponents on fair terms. Obvious stuff

Boxing is a short lived career-he will be retired aged 35 or so and have to live off that money for the rest of his life.
And be sure those around him o ly spend not make.

Canelo legit wants to be considered one of the greatest fighters of all time, and I respect that.
