How on earth does Ketchel beat Hagler? Although I don't agree with it you have to respect LaMotta and give him a shot at beating Hagler Robinson might just be able to do it. It would be close. Monzon is a pick 'em fight in my opinion and one I don't like predicting.
I can't think of anybody off hand. Quite possibly Roy Jones, the king of blinding speed. Then again, it's 15 rounds. Roy was never tested by anybody as complete as prime Hagler, superb boxer and relentless puncher all rolled into one.
a Gibbons, a Dillon, a McAvoy, a Cerdan, these are the type that could pull it of, not saying they would, but they could. great fighters that are noted busy rough & tough *******s fit for anyone even bigger fighters, thats what you need to beat a prime Hagler... just thinking it's would of been great IF Marvin could have met Qawi at catch weights say in & around 170, I still go with Qawi, he's the type of fighter to beat Hagler.
Ray Leonard sort of did it. Roy Jones would, Charles probably does, Robinson as he grew into the weight probably would, Monzon might, Hopkins probably would, Toney could, Burley would run him close, Greb who knows. McCallum and Kalambay I think could do it. I'd favour him over Nunn but I'd give Nunn a shot. Marshall you have to give a shot based on his wins I don't think any of these can: Ketchel, LaMotta,Tiger, Griffith
Greb - no footage. McCallum - can't decide. Hagler looked more dynamic of the two. Kalambay - don't know if he could pull it off over the whole distance. Nunn - don't know if he could be consistent and disciplined enough. But he has chances. Same opinion.
great conversations everyone but THIS is the kind of post i was hoping for :good good (and controversial) analysis!
Prime Toney, and also Robinson, I just think James would make him miss all night, while standing right infront of him. He couldn't hurt Hagler but he would outpoint him IMO. Robinson just was too complete, he had the chin to take his shots, the movement to frustrate him,and the power to make Marvin think twice
toney is what i was thinking, robinson was complete but he's not the kind of stylistic nightmare i was imagining. robinson would win more on quality than style. who is a lesser fighter than hagler, who could win based more on his stylistic advantages?
Monzon Hopkins SRR Jones SRL Outside chances LaMotta, Cerdan, Burley. Toney might frustrate him a bit being a counter puncher. So hard to judge that far back with Greb, Walker, etc. One person that completely escapes the radar due to numerous things is Billy Conn. His speed and boxing skill could be interesting here?
:think movement of leonard (in fact better than leonard), ridiculous chin, ramrod jab. capable of outboxing hagler if needed, able to withstand a trench battle and slick enough to avoid getting drawn into hagler's counterpunching.
