What little moves & tricks have you seen recent ATG fighters take from older ATG's?

    Although he is ATG himself, I know Duran borrowed the thing he used to do when he missed the right hook and would then step over into the southpaw stance to create an angle for his next shot. Im not certain but I think it might have been Fitzsimmons he got the move from, Im sure somebody can correct me if I gave the wrong name lol.

    I'll have to check back and look at this...he did often seem to step over with his right foot after throwing his patented overhand right. I remember Cotto in the Margarito rematch jumping off of his back-foot pivot into a right hand, landing in a southpaw stance, and repeating the process from the opposite angle. Thanks for posting!

    This is one of my favourite Donaire moments.

    That being said, is it really the Dempsey Roll? I've always thought that the creator of that video used the incorrect label to describe what Donaire is doing. From what I've seen, the Dempsey Roll is more about weaving from side to side while throwing hooks, putting weight behind each shot:

    (0:37 - 0:40)

    What Donaire is doing in the other clip looks quite different -- instead of planting his feet he's darting from side to side, and instead of throwing powerful hooks he's using leaping straights and uppercuts. He also pauses more rather than chaining the punches together. That being said, I do see why people compare it to the Roll, due to the constant side to side motion while throwing punches. Donaire is also a big fan of Hajime no Ippo, and the main character in that series uses the Dempsey Roll as his signature move, so I wouldn't be surprised if Donaire was trying his own, flashy version of the move.

    I actually had this issue myself; the traditional Dempsey roll looks simply like looped punches thrown out of a crouching bob and weave, but in this case Donaire is hopping in and out laterally without crouching, as he's the taller opponent. Hajie no Ippo has a huge thing with the Dempsey Roll, so that could be it. As you said, it may be him trying it within his own style, which is why I thought to put "his version"; similar, but not quite exact. Though he has used a more conventional version against other fighters, like Mathebula, if I remember right. Ward may be someone who at times uses the Dempsey Roll like a true swarmer.

    Hopkins has been said but surprised no one spoke of his Walcott influence. I heard that even Ali emulated Walcott. Footwork was so smooth.

    I mean look through 2:34-2:52,

    Now look at Walcott :15-:35,

    Same pattern

    Alvarez and Chavez Sr have similarities too though I didn't get the footage I wanted of Alvarez lol

    I've heard of the Walcott influence but never got around to it; from what you've shown, controlling the center of the ring and walking fighters into shots or claiming the inside by shooting leads and then weaving in the pocket are the trademarks BHop no doubt inherited from Walcott's arsenal, either intentionally or through learning as a student in the gym from the likes of Fischer & own experiences. Good **** man that footage was great :jjj

    Here's one I just noticed today. Both Roberto Duran and Bernard Hopkins liked to sometimes throw a jab just short, momentarily leaving it in place so that it would blind an opponent, then come forward with an uppercut using the other hand.

    For example, see Roberto Duran doing it right around 4:00 in this Gissaquid tribute:

    and Hopkins doing it at :40 and 3:37 of this highlight:

    I don't know if it's just that you have two of the best combination/counter punchers of the last 30 years,but when I watch Marquez,I'm always reminded of Mike McCallum and the way they counter with the (usually lead) right and seem to be able to often land even before the opposing blow they intend to counter.

    Check 1.21 and many times during the fight with McCrory if you were so inclined;

    And at 1.52 and 4.56 and many times during the first and third fights with Pac;

    More a stylistic similarity than a copied trick though.
