What Lucian Bute's just done is remarkably rare!

When was the last time that the champion has crossed the ocean to fight the challenger in his backyard EVEN though:-

    1. The champion is the much bigger draw
    2. The champion is the bigger name
    3. More money could be made in the champion's home-town for both the challenger and champion
    4. The challenger is coming off a loss and the champion is unbeaten
    5. The champion is favourite to win the fight
    6. The champion would have had better exposure on US TV (Showtime) had he chosen an easier fight than the challenger, whilst fighting at home?
    7. The champion is more highly ranked than the challenger by most unbiased commentators

I can't recall the last time this has happened before...

...just shows how much Bute is avoided and how much he had to give away to make this fight, to consolidate his legacy and make his fans proud!

...just shows the perverse effects that a tournament like the super 6 can have if it doesn't involve the best fighters in the world, but closes up shop to promote only a chosen few.

Please give other examples of when something like this has happened before in boxing, if you can!:good

I think it was Amir Khan about two months ago mate.

    Nope.

That's just a rematch. Peterson beat Khan and he's not coming off a loss. And Khan is not the champion. Peterson is. And Khan needs to fight Peterson to prove himself before he can move on.

    Poor effort.

He's talking about the first fight.

Thanks for that. My apologies to Vidic. Good call, but Peterson wasn't coming off a loss and partly the reason the fight took place in the USA was because that's what it took for US TV to back the fight. It helped Khan promote himself against an American opponent on US TV. That's not the case here with Bute.

What Bute's done is even more unique.

    Anyone else that comes close?

It won't match all of that but Vitali and Adamek is an interesting recent anomaly along those lines.

It goes some way to making up for him hiding and fighting no-marks in Montreal, calling himself 'champion', while the top fighters in the division fight each other. The guy is 32 years old remember, and this is his first meaningful fight.

Yeah, but has Bute, like Khan, let his opponent have his very own referee? Didn't think so.

    (Just messin')

Yeah, Bute's got balls. Being the champion and holding all of the cards (everything you've mentioned in your first post), he had no reason to go out of his way come to his challenger's backyard.

Pacquiao is very generous, he often fights people coming off of devastating, brutal losses.

    What a man :hey

Let's not forget people, that Bute was not invited to the tournament b/c he was with HBO. He was definitly top 6 in the world then, better than Abraham, Green, Taylor, Johnson, Dirrel and Ward at the time, and only a hair less than Froch and Kessler on the world stage. He was literally #3 in the world and was excluded due to contracts.

So Bute drops his HBO contract to get into the tournament as an alternate, and what happens. G@@53N does everything in his power to keep Bute out, but allowing both Johnson and Green to participate. Showtime did make it up to Bute by overpaying him in an effort to get him a megafight with the WINNER, but the winner happened to be managed by the very same promoter who kept Bute out. How ****ing pathetic is that.

Now, all Bute wants is to fight the best. Those are Ward, Kessler, Froch, Steiglitz and D2. But he wants Ward moreso than ANY others since all but Froch have run from him with their tail between their legs.:rofl:rofl

Of course these doesn't meet the criteria's of the TS as neither was coming off a loss.
