The majority of boxing experts said that he was the greatest boxer of all time.
But why did they choose him over others?

1st of all the eye test by men who know boxing. Though the absolute best
years of Robinson's career was not filmed, hundreds of reputable men
who watched him at his best have said he was the greatest talent the
sport of boxing has ever produced.
Other fighters, old coaches , reporters, etc . Men who saw everyone
from Hank Armstrong to probably Jones Jr.
Though theirs very little film of him at welter, there's plenty of film at middle.
What we see is when he was on his game, he was machine.
A combination of speed, power, skills, aggression and killer instinct .
It's easy to infer how great he had to be at the lighter weight.
Competition, he beat the man, who beat the man. A who's
    who of ATG fighters.
Longevity and winning streaks. The man won almost a hundred
fights in a row against great competition, he met all styles
and abilities ,found away to win, usually spectacularly . Who else can touch
    that?
He had over 200 pro fights, really didn't start losing regularly until he
    was close to the end.
No other fighter can match the totality of his career.
Head to head? The only one I could see beating him is prime
Ray Leonard. Leonard had the physicality and skill level.
In his short career he faced a better group of ATG'S Than
    Robinson faced.
It's why I place him at #2 at welterweight.

He had supreme talent in almost every phase. Blazing handspeed, footwork and balance that were uncommon, quickness and coordination, Robinson could glide backwards, stop on a dime and whip 3 lefthooks at an opponent in fluid fashion.
There have been fast, elusive fighters before and since but Sugar Ray had a little bit more. He was also tall, rangy for his division (Welterweight) and one other he had offensively is 1 shot knockout power in both hands. He was so powerful he could almost call the shot when he got pissed off which at times he did. Especially that lefthook. It only took one.
He had a good defense but was offensive minded, always looking to please the fans. So he got hit at times but he had been gifted with a very good chin, otherworldly recovery ability when he was shook. The ability to shift gears and box if necessary.
A pioneer in the ring and out. He thought big and knew his value as a black boxer in the 1940s and 50s Its even more impressive how he carried himself out of the ring. Arrogant? Hell yea. He was Sugar Ray.
Other fighters were slaves to the IBC or the managers guild Robinson stayed independent because as he put it "other promoters pay on American currency as well"

Ali couldn't punch like Robinson and never punched to the body. By age 33 he was often laying on the ropes taking punishment to the head and body until the other heavyweights got weary. The fighters that Ali faced generally at heavyweight don't have the same level of skills that the top Welterweight or middleweight have. Quite often Ali had a weight pull in his fights where Robinson fought guys 10-15 heavier on the regular.

Robinson looks better and more complete on films and we don't even have his prime years (not much). Look at it this way, what if all we had were Ali's fights from 70 on? We didn't have his 60s fights. We saw him lose to Frazier, win some get outboxed and cracked by Ken Norton, win over Foreman go on to lose Busload of fights before he turned 36.

Robinson didn't have several fights where the judges gifted him. Ali did. One close loss Ray had was to Basillio and had that been Ali's judges Robinson gets the nod. Sugar Ray outboxed Gene Fullmer's ears off in Los Angeles in 1960 at age 39. Only to get a draw. Should have been Middleweight Champion yet again. Ray is one of the few legends who the close you inspect the bigger and greater he comes out..

Lastly Ali's own words. He copied him, idolized him.
If none my words move you there is always this

its here legend etm what are you talking about more skilled cant you see ali moving more smoothly on his feet its looks fancy and his speed from range is better and his head movement ali whole movement is more polished all around

ali added lateral movement smoothly which ray didnt have smoothly his movements was sloopy compared

mutiple times ray would be off balance after throwing certain shots that was common back then even when joe fought it's all in this vid

where the more skilled people in sugar era came from I dont know I have always exposed them as trash in movement and skill

it's no way ray had he been hw could ever beat joe or earn cause his movements wasnt as advanced

Ali needed a big ring to dance around, big lumbering, slow heavyweights. Robinson footwork was more educated, more economical. Check out what he does to Graziano after getting knocked down, sets a trap, spins him and turns his lights out.
Concede this one Boss. Ali's own words speak the loudest.

It's a damn shame that the video YOU introduced to prove YOUR point
    actually validates everyone else's.

Once in awhile there's no shame in conceding an argument. You'll probably gain credibility anything in a clear cut situation like this. I didn't respond because there was nothing to respond to. You had nothing credible counter everything I posted.
