It was apart of it. His speed, chin, power, footwork, ring IQ, height, reach and skills were why he had success.
not ahead of his time in any manner of Boxing, there were plenty of great and stylish fighters then and thereafter & before... he was like any elite fighter in any era of the sport, he had that little bit extra. he was exceptional, committed and just plain better than many, but not by any alien type measure, just the Best of his Time. Which also puts him into 'arguably' the Greatest Ever, but he's not alone there either, overall and nor from his own time too.
Literally everything that *can* make a fighter good. To me one of his more conspicuous qualities is how when unloading rapid fire combinations he’ll often shift his angle and footing between each punch while maintaining perfect balance and technique the whole time. It’s as uncanny as prime Ali dodging punches *literally* without moving.
He could do everything extremely well. Great boxer, great puncher, speed, footwork, tough as nails and determined to win. He checked all boxes.
https://tss.ib.tv/boxing/featured-b...97-the-technical-breakdown-sugar-ray-robinson I don't agree with everything e.g some of those mentioned with faster hands or about the one punch power and even his size advantages but it's a beautiful breakdown of SRR. IMO, the greatest.
One thing I do find interesting, is the main canidates for best ever, are largely offencive fighters.
What made Ray Robinson so good? He trained very very hard. I've heard that he was so committed to training, he'd even spar his wife at home. Now that's dedication.
To me, Robinson was second best in basically everything. This combination means he always had something to defeat the top fighters he fought, whether it be IQ, power, reach etc. Some fighters surpass him in single qualities, but they don't have the combination.
