What makes a fighter GREAT!? His skills with a few good wins under his belt. or his willingness to fight anyone with several GREAt wins under his belt, even though he lacks technique?
His resume....look at fighters like Marciano, or Foreman these guys were no technicians but there universially recognized as some of the GOAT skills don't mean a damn thing if you ain't got the resume or compettion to go with it
IMO his skills, i just hate seeing much more technical fighters loose to someone due to the opponents chin or workrate kinda like cotto margarito... edit: however.. yes, a bit of both is needed for 'greatness' in this context, and yes, these skills must be legitimate, i.e fighter will loose fights in which he showed purer boxing skill due to another attribute such as resistance or power.
Skills in my opinion. Roy Jones has a solid resume, but his status as an ATG is based mainly because of his freakish skills.
Another mayweather thread huh? For a guy who can't stand him you make atleast 1 PBF thread a day. I'm starting to think you had an alias that got banned because your MO is familiar.:think
So someone who accomplished more than RJJ in a career by taking on the hardest and toughest opponents should be ranked lower than someone who didn't take as many quality opponents because he didn't have the better skills?
Not necessarily, I was stating an example to back up my case. You need both of them to be a great fighter, resume and skills. Zab Judah has the skills but he isn't great. They go hand in hand. But I think skills are just a little more important. But again, that's my opinion.
Roy Jones' status as an ATG is more due to his incredible athleticism than his skills. And of course his resume reflects his greatness..
Skills. You can have an unbeaten record just by fighting **** people and theres nothing great about that.
GREAT is a recipe that needs some of both. Each Great can do it his own way. But you can look on the one hand at a Gatti, who fought everyone but didn't have the skills; And then a Calzaghe or Floyd or even to a lesser extent RJJ, who shone talentwise but have a bit of a manufactured resume. True GREATs like Joe Louis, Roberto Duran, Hagler, have outstanding qualities and a willingness to test themselves and take chances.
How highly would you rate Roy? I can name countless fighters to have faced and beaten better opposition, but few with his level of skill and dominance during his prime and his era. There are many factors which go into deciding an ATG, which is what makes it so difficult and ultimately subjective.
