What makes anyone think Pavlik can beat Calzaghe?

kylie is way to predictable, he throws 3 jabs and then a huge right, plus calzaghe will never lose to a white boy.

Is everyone firmly in the Pavlik would crush Calzaghe or Calzaghe would embarrass Pavlik camps? Am I the only one who thinks it would be a really close fight?

    Calzaghe advantages
    --------------------------
Pretty good stanima for an older fighter
    Unmatched handspeed
    Strong workrate
Facing an opponent with a predictable attack pattern ( especially given that Calzaghe is probably too quick for Pavlik to mount a successful body attack )

    Pavlik Advantages
    --------------------------
    Even better stanima
    Strong punching Power
    Unrelenting pressure and workrate
Facing an opponent who won't be throwing punches capable of hurting him

    The fight
    ---------------------------
Calzaghe has a better chance of breaking his hand than hurting Pavlik with a punch sO he won't try it. He'll stick ( wisely ) to a the slapping attack mode he used to outpoint Hopkins. Calzaghe will try to use his faster movement, rhythm and handspeed to do the same to Pavlik. But Pavlik knows this and will adjust his fight plan accordingly. The way to undo a runner is with constant pressure. He maintain a constant advance ( all the while trying to cut off the ring ) and maintain a pace and workrate that'll make the pace of Calzaghe-Hopkins look like a liesurely stroll. And as Calzaghe won't be throwing big punches Pavlik will be able to sacrifice defense to increase his offensive attack. It would be the best "slapper" in boxing today against perhaps the best "pressure fighter" in boxing today.

    Will this fight happen?
    -----------------------------
No. Joe is most likely really retiring. His hand injury (brittle hands?) delaying the RJJ fight I believe is another symptom of a fighter who is ready to hang up his gloves. And even though he probably believes that he could beat Pavlik, he doesn't want to work quite that hard in his final fight. It's quite possible that Calzaghe was serious when he was calling out Pavlik almost a year ago, but afterwards realized that he really did have only a few fights left in him and decided to stick with those most likely to enhance his legacy. ( Take a look at the ridiculous things DLH is doing to secure his legacy ) I've resigned myself that this fight will not happen. Calzaghe is retiring and Pavlik simply got there too late. At this point I'd just like it if the two fighters would come to a private understanding that the fight will not happen. That way Pavlik and his team can stop wasting their breath trying to call out Calzaghe while Calzaghe and his team can stop trying to downplay Pavlik in their efforts to quiet public demand for a fight they don't want.

Correct. He hasn`t shown anything that Lacy or Kessler hadn`t shown earlier. Some people just don`t learn. :patsch

some people take the slapping thing too far as with the almost ubiased advantages/disadvantages above. to suggest that Joe's punches don't hurt is ridiculous. Otherwise boxers would just walk right up to Joe and throw haymakers without even bothering to guard. Guaranteed you will feel those punches even if they won't knock you out. Joe's opponents are lucky he can't throw like he could in 97 when he floored Eubank with a left that wasn't even on target.

sure most of us would rightfully pick calzaghe, but pavlik has a puncher's chance...i pick taylor to school him or even knock him out late rounds prior to their first fight. Look what happened folks, i'm not comparing both fighters but what i'm just saying is let's give pavlik a chance. I know calzaghe has a good chin but still we wouldn't know how he can take pavlik's power

It's hard not to see it for Calzaghe but Pavlik's size, power, workrate, determination, and relentless pressure is hard to ignore. Some things are easier to measure than others. I think guys like Pavlik and Margarito get underrated by some fans to some extent because they don't have the "wow" factor in their game. They are just blue collar guys who outwork their opponents.

as has been stated Pavlik isn't a one punch KO artist, he's an accumulation puncher. Joe isn't going to stand there and take those punches so Pavlik will never accumulate enough damage to make Joe see stars. Joe would probably get bashed up for 2 or three rounds, before he sussed Pavlik out and then boxed from the outside and picked him off with his jabs and combos. You think Pavlik's workrate is better than Joe's? Please.

Joe has faced people of Pavlik's calibre and style before.

Pavlik has never faced anyone of Joe's calibre and style.

He has a punchers chance at the most, and Joe would need to be having a very bad match.

Calzaghe said that he wants to retire undefeated. Read between the lines.

Mac Man, Joe is a master boxer and probably the second or third most intelligent fighter in the game today behind B-HOP. I would favor Calzaghe over Pavlik because of his versatility, southpaw and unorthadox style of fighting, and the fact that he's nimble and fast on his toes. He's an expert at boxing and this should be a cinch.

    It's not though.

Because Pavlik is HARD as ****. Yeah, he comes right at you and he's fairly predictable, but he doesn't tire, hits hard as a mother ****er and throws a shitload of punches. Not to mention, Calzaghe seems to be ducking him. Calzaghe's skills are much better than Pavlik's, but you can't underestimate hardness.

I really don't think Pavlik would beat Calzaghe if they fought. It might not be an impressive win, but I think Calzaghe does enough to win a decision.
