I'm not a huge fan, but I personally like floyd's style....People who say guys like floyd, dawson, malignaggi, calderon are boring....are the fans I also feel are huge MMA fans, and could defect to MMA for good eventually... The people who knock floyd either don't like him personally or they just want to see complete brutality every fight.....Boxing is not called "Killer Knockouts" it's called boxing....You could call me a fan, but I'm also realistic about him...
Floyd is a great self-promoter.....It is not important that you are loved, it is important that you are known....and he does a masterful job of self-promoting himself, most of the time in a negative way....but it creates buzz...
IMO: Skill, precision, timing, overall mastery. I think those aspects are secondary for Floyd's casual fans who, IMO, are more drawn by his personality & "**** the world, I'm rich!" media image.
I agree with your points, but I disagree with your premise about love vs notoriety. As Machiavelli put it in "The Prince": "Is it better to be loved or feared?" We know what Pacquiao's & Mayweather's respective approaches are... You CAN be feared & renowned. You can also be loved & renowned. What you CAN'T do, or at least what is VERY, VERY difficult to achieve, is to be BOTH loved AND feared. Floyd got the Apollo Creed persona down. He can't switch to Rocky now...
I agree. The real turn-off about Floyd is seeing an interview. His cockiness is annoying, but just watching him fight is definitely entertaining. I think this stuff with Pacquiao is just another attempt at Floyd getting some attention.
In America he struggles to sell out average size arena's so his popularity is up for debate. However in the UK he was treated like some kind of god on his recent trip.
The problem is he doesn't have the fighting style to go with the persona. If he were a brawler or at least a guy with serious KO power, it'd make more sense. But it's tough to be taken seriously as a **** talker when your best line has to be "I'll outpoint the **** out of you."
