He aint no slick boxer is he? I am a fan naturally, but in all honesty I was impressed by Bute in his last few fights n thought he was rightly the favourite. Carl is so often very crude and raw....yet apart from Ward and Kessler he always seems to prevail. Tenacity, solid chin and lots of combos seem to nullify technically better boxers so often. Hmmm. Discuss.
fight or box? He can of course box as he demonstrated with Abraham...but often don't you think he's crude and raw? I never like seeing a fighter standing in front of his opponent with his arms down by his side and throwing wild swinging combos...but he seems to get away with it...sure he might take one or 2 shots but always seems to get his own in and then some! I think there is definately room for him to work on his defensive skills...would be nice to see him tighten up a bit here but you can't deny what he does works!
His will and toughness combined with his underrated boxing skills. Froch is an old school warrior and a g.
He boxed a perfect fight, good defense, disciplined offense, and Bute had leaky defense so it helped Froch when he had Bute in trouble
I haven't seen much of him, but from what I've seen he seems to be quite determined, he punches pretty hard, and he uses combinations rather than just one shot at a time. He also does a pretty risky thing of rushing in with his shots -- this leaves him wide open to be countered, but it can also probably surprise his opponent and unnerve them. I also think Bute's defence and punch resistance were lacking -- he just didn't know how to deal with Froch's attacks, and he didn't have the chin to save him either. Froch is like a wrecking ball -- not particularly elegant or refined, but you know he's going to come right for you trying to crush you. As Ward showed, you need to have poise to deal with his aggression and habit of rushing in, and you need skill to counter him and keep him at the ideal distance. Not many fighters are at that kind of level.
It's because when he trades with his opponents.....he hits harder. There were many times Bute and him connected together but only one man folded. Plus he can box, use range and footwork. And he understands the physcology of fight. ie: risk vs reward. Calzaghe was cut from the same cloth.
Will to win, a big set of bollocks, an iron chin, never say die attitude, the mentality of wanting to go right through his opponent and cave his face in. Mix that in with underrated boxing ability (ok he squares his feet and body up when throwing some clumsy combos, but they land, and have decent pop, and he can utilize a jab brilliantly when he gets the chance) Amazing people on ESB still doubt this man, he's a throwback and an absolute British boxing legend and an idol to all his fans.
I just think both fighting or boxing comes naturally to him, although just not as apparent as with other fighters. Like the old fighter s such as Demspey who make technical mistakes when in training etc but in the ring it's just instinctive.
I think he must be one of these fighters that is a lot better when you're actually in there with him than it looks from watching him from the outside. I've always thought he looked slow, technically a bit crude and raw like you say, the type who I would have guessed would get beat by most world class fighters with decent boxing ability. Can't take it away from him though, he's overachieved big time and showed how little I know about boxing , I don't think I've ever been so wrong about a fighter.
Physically and mentally strong. In hindsight, a little boy like Bute was destined to get crushed by him.
And still I get puzzled how he wasn't able to make any adjustments to Ward's grinding style. He seemed capable of beating Ward.
