As time goes by, staying healthy at 147 when you're like 6'2'' is not reasonable.. I would actually like P. Willy to put on a little muscle and settle at 168 where the best available fights are. Pavlik as far as I'm concerned will fight his last middleweight bout with Williams also..
I think Wright right now would clearly beat Sturm. Wright is a better boxer with far better putting his guard up in which Sturm does the same but not better at doing it.
Pavlik has had several fights where the total would have been near, or over 1000, but the poor ******* on the recieving end, well . . . you know:yep
PW has freakish natural talent and great work ethic, producing a style damn hard to figure out. On the other hand, I don't think PW and his lil'version Celestino Caballero use their height very well. Look at Vitali Klitschko mastering that advantage, it's night and day. That's why we've already seen smart fighters figuring Caballero and Williams out, they weren't just lucky. Now the question is: instead of figuring out, can Kelly Pavlik break though that style with physical force and chop the weaker Williams down? We're gonna get an exciting answer to that.
Sturm is a very good boxer, has a tight D and an excellent jab. But more than anything else, he's seasoned, a seasoned champion at that, Winky Wright fights once every other year, he's not seasoned, he's shop worn.. he's finished.
PTP is a physical anomaly considering his size, reach, workrate, stamina, endurance, speed, movement, and quickness. Oh and he can prolly still make 147.
The main reason he's great is because he's a genetic freak. Imagine Joe Calzaghe being a 6ft 8 middleweight with an 85" reach......that's the equivalent of what Williams is at welterweight, it's madness.
fam stop trying to search for a cop out.... he is a special fighter... it is up to him to continue to prove it he throws too many punches? its not good for the fans? wtf are you talkinga bout
People too much confuse work rate with something to be impressed with. Please note HE HAS A LEGITIMATE LOSS on his record. Granted he avenged it in impressive fashion but the way Quintana beat him was he got in between his punches and was catching Paul with hooks while Paul would lean over. I think he's a very good fighter but he's not impossible to beat as we've seen. How he fluctuates at various weights is impressive but I strongly doubt he'll be able to go back down to 147 after the Pavlik fight His defense is more his offense. When he fought Mitchell, he was able to land some nice hooks on him and Mitchell was giving up atleast 6 to 7 inches in height that fight.
Only, Joe is able to adapt in the midst of a fight and does not rely on natural ability to win him fights. A Quintana, b-type fighter would not beat Joe Calzaghe.
wow now the **** haters start coming out... if you dont like him and just want to make up some **** to discredit him just be liek "i dont like him" youll get more credit for that instead of looking like some little cry baby *****
You aren't exactly an impartial observer here, are you? Look, I have nothing against Paul Williams, there's no doubt he's talented and he's got the potential to do great things across a number of weight classes, but the term 'special' should be reserved for those who have more than a UD win over a past-prime Winky, a scraped win against Margarito and a loss to a B- level fighter.
This reminds me of the George vs. Ted Danson scene on Seinfeld. George: "Why him? (Danson) Why not me? I'm just as good as him?" Jerry: "No. You're worse. You're much, much worse." To answer your question, because Williams is bless with a talent that is literally one in a million. He has probably the perfect boxing boxing with an insane reach and height advantage over every opponent he faces, and he is still, somehow, fairly strong. Add to the a great jab, fast hand and feet and a seemly durable chin, and you have an elite fighter in the making.
