What makes Povetkin so competitive in an era of giants?

Povetkin is TOP-5 HW for a long time now.

He's short compared to Wlad, Fury, AJ, Wilder, and even Ortiz. With short arms.

He'd be average-sized HW even in Holmes era.

I think the answer is his amateur background.

He's pretty good at mid range, and he always finds a way to land series of punches. Works to the body, cuts off the ring, throws double hooks. He did it from amateur days.

Surely, he has improved at pros, but mostly in physical aspects like power and stamina. But he was just as skilled in early 00s when he was amateur.

Whether many on here will admit to it or not... he's a VERY skilled HW with a solid chin and very good power. I think he'd be a problem for any heavyweight of any era. Yes there are some that beat him... but on any given day he has the ability to beat any of them.

I do think a fight that he would lose probably 10 out of 10 times is prime Vitali. Too strong, too skilled and too much reach/range. Not to mention a chin I don't think Alexander could break through.

I reckon he stops Vitali on cuts in 6...

To be fair, his best wins were mostly against the guys his own size. One of the many reasons that made a possible match up with Wilder intriguing, and we'll probably never get it now.

If he did... I reckon he would be man enough to grant Vitali a rematch. Especially being only 37 years old!

You're right. Rather than accept he was fairly old in heavyweight terms he should have roided his way back into top shape ala Sasha. I'm sure you would have really respected him for doing that.
