Agree with everything but that. Hopkins was green, 2-3 years prior to when his prime years started.

Its easy to say in hindsight he was green. Jones was in the other corner.. And despite a damaged hand was still able to make Hopkins look amateruish.

I thought Hopkins was in his prime when he fought Trinidad to be honest, and Roy Jones Jr turned away from steve collins when he called him out to his face, the fact of the matter is Roy Jones Jr had the chance, to fight the best, and he countlesly wanted no part of hopkins, and many other fighters, doesnt this sound abit like Calzaghe's on Dawson or Pavlik, I agree he was a great fighter Jones and wasnt Ruiz tailor made for roy, nice to see a valid point on his achivements which is what i wanted to see but can you agree with me that he is similar to calzaghe

Im a big fan of both guys but realitstically Jones fought the way better competition and took more chances...Jones started at middle went to super middle, then LH,then HVY,then did the dumbest thing ever and came back down to LH.....He fought better names than Joe.asmuch as i like Joe i cant argue this case for him...:rasta

Jones by a MILE or 10.

JC had a great run against mostly middling talent with a few (very well timed) clashes with aged greats...and he never lost which is very hard to do even against not-the-best opposition, definitely makes him a HOFer. BUT, BUT, BUT, as has been well stated above, RJJ fought and beat two other HOF and ATG in Toney and Hop and he did it in their primes. He beat a Heavyweight and beat him soundly, and he destroyed the same kind of middling talent that JC beat. As one sided as the Lacy win was-JC couldn't put him away, and JL has been exposed as so-so. Roy one-punched KO or totally annihilated so many guys at that level-Mequi sosa comes to mind.

I think toney would have wrecked JC and a younger B-hop would have too: frankly JC was lucky to get the nod against a very old Hop who nonetheless put him on his ass, while JC was largely landing nothing punches...not saying JC didn't deserve the W...but it was basically an even fight. If you line up a prime JC-say 2-3 years ago- against a prime hopkins, a prime toney, a prime griffin (very tough under-rated guy), a prime Tarver (who roy did beat in their first affair), HW Ruiz, an old Virgil Hill, and then Sosa, Johnson, Woods, old Mcallum, etc. etc. no question in mind that his 0 goes away. And his wins would never have been as dominating and impressive as Jones'---does that matter? Sure does when it comes to ATG status. A win is a win to take a belt...but in the annals of history, quality of win is every bit as important. So, I'd put it like this: JC is a certain HOF with a very, very impressive run...his 46-0 is an incredible achievement regardless of opposition-which was not bad, just not too good either. But RJJ did things that will be talked about, remembered and revered for as long as there are people who love the sport.

Jones fighting Toney is more significant than any of Joe C's fights period.

Hopkins was a great fighter long before he fought Tito. He only got his props because he whupped Tito like no one had ever done before, gave him his first loss, and won Don Kings middleweight tourney that Joe wouldnt participate in. Hopkins didnt become a house hold name until he beat Tito. He was VERY known and dangerous fighter that was well respected in boxing circiles long before that fight. Now Jones had already fought Hopkins. Prior to Hopkins beating Tito NO ONE was screaming for a rematch. The reason why they never fought after Tito was because negociations broke down and Jones went up in weight to face Ruiz. Meanwhile Hopkins was getting ribbed by Merchant for facing Morrad Hakkar and Eastman. As for Collins forget about it. Back then he wasnt a big enough name to be on HBO and a nobody outside of Britain.I remember Tito calling out Jones back then. Even he didnt get a look in. They didnt fight until recently and by then it never even mattered.

thanks man that was a great answer, and what i wanted to hear, i know calzaghes resume's not great but what i didnt no was why roy was getting so much more respect than calzaghe just becuase he had so much skill level, and I agree with you Jones did have some great fights with some decent competition but Im always going to wonder on how he would of coped with a ruged tougher fighter such as collins, or how he would of coped with equal great talents of eubank and benn (when he started to use his brain) or how he had a chance to fight holyfield or Lewis and make one of the biggest boxing specatcles of all time, I guess even though I admire Jones for his skill, his career could of been the Greatest Ever without a question

You certainly done your homework on Jones, and thanks for your comments, as i said ive only been in boxing for 3 years and i love it but i still want to learn, so anyways I like your answer but can i ask you were u would rank Jones Jr in the greatest of all time, but if you ask yourself on how his career and where it would of been if he had fought some much tougher competition than ruiz and clinton woods and imagine if they had been lewis or holyfield and wins next to there names, how would of his legacy of been then, Jones in my eyes is a legend of boxing and will become a myth of how great he was in the future, but his career will be shrewd by much weaker competition than he could of fought just like calzaghe, thats why i was comparing them as they both were great fighters who didnt fight the other greats or true challenges which they could of had

Jones in some respect was too good for his own good and was judged as such. Because of his insane ability people expected so much more. But the facts remain at any time in history Jones would have held his own with any of the all time greats at 175. The only reason why fights with Woods etc happened was because Jones loved belts and wanted to hold on to all of them. That was the right thing to do in some respect as it prevented the title from being splinttered. That being said 75 was a wasteland when Jones was top of the pile. As for all time rankings those are always difficult but Jones makes a good case for top 30 at least.

If you seriously need to have explained to you why Jones's achievements are in a different stratosphere to a nondescript 9-year WBOgus smw reign (weak opposition easily beaten in routine hometown defences) punctuated by a couple of quality wins at the end, then you should take up a different sport. :good

did you read any other post's ive made on this thread? and to be honest i cant really understand what your saying, i was saying there career's are quite similar and jones made countless number of defences agaisnt fighters who were way out of his league just like calzaghe , I was curious on how a fighter raked up belts fighting weaker opposition could be so much different than a fighter doing eaxctly the same thing, TO be honest I think many people are blinded by jones's skill and showmanship, fighting clinton woods in your prime, doesnt really make much of difference from fighting robin reid in calzaghes prime, both these fighters have been doing the same thing for years,

Im gonna have to pick you up on that, i actually think the hopkins that fought calzaghe was nearer his prime than jones' hopkins!!

Plus jones wasnt 36 like calzaghe and hopkins was in his 1st ever title fight so how the F**k you can say he was closer to his prime (which was prob tito time) is beyond me.

oh and jones beat him more convincingly???

calzaghe landed the most punches on hopkins than any other fighter.

so please, im not gonna go on record about resumes or anything, i just wanted to set you straight about the rubbish you just wrote.

Jones: World champion at 4 weight divisions
Calzaghe: World champion at 2 weight divisions

Jones: Held 9 major world titles in his career
Calzaghe: Held 4 major world title in his career

Jones: Intermittently world pound-for-pound number 1 between 1994 and 2004, the undisputed number 1 continuously between 1994 and 2000
Calzaghe: Highest he ever got was number 2, was only there briefly before being overtaken by JM Marquez, retired whilst number 3. Had been a world champion for 9 years before even making it into the top 10

Jones: His fans define him as the first former middleweight champion in over a century to move up and win a heavyweight world title
Calzaghe: His fans define him by the length of his title reign at supermiddleweight - a 9 year reign holding the least prestigious major belt in a weak division punctuated at the end by unifying over 2 fights but never holding all 4 major belts at the one time

Jones: Beat prime world p4p#2 James Toney, is the only man ever to decisively defeat ATG Bernard Hopkins, beat John Ruiz (who had recently went 1-1-1 with Holyfield and who beat Hasim Rahman in his next fight after Jones) to win WBA heavy belt despite a 30lbs weight deficit, and also holds win over quality opposition like Antonio Tarver, Virgil Hill, Montell Griffin and Mike McCallum
Calzaghe: Beat smw rival champ Mikkel Kessler, beat smw rival champ Jeff Lacy, edged an SD over a 43-year-old version of Hopkins, and other than that... beat a semi-retired non-ranked version of Chris Eubank, slapped around the bloodied corpse of Roy Jones, and holds a couple of wins over decent comp like Byron Mitchell, Robin Reid and Richie Woodhall

Jones: At his peak a truly magnificent talent, up there with Whitaker, Chavez and Mayweather as the very best fighters h2h of the past 25 years
Calzaghe: At his peak a very effective and efficient supermiddleweight and one of the top 15 fighters of his era, worthy of mention in the same breath as other quality champions like Trinidad, Toney, Mosley, Wright, Tszyu, and Marquez

There genuinely is no comparison here. MHO :good
