Calzaghe. He beat the version that was one of the best P4P fighters in the world, sandwiched between impressive wins against Tarver, Winky, and Pavlik. The version that Jones beat wasn't even good enough to beat Segundo Mercado yet.

Roy's past-prime decline 2004-8 shouldn't be more important than his decade of prime 1993-2003 when it comes to evaluating his greatness as a boxer. Julio Cesar Chavez was stopped by Tszyu and Oscar after he was clearly past-it, but that doesn't mean the more career-savvy Ricardo Lopez was a greater boxer than JCC IMO.

To be honest Roy Jones was declining as early as 01-02, but it was only subtle, nothing major (but you could see him start to go to the ropes at points - but nothing serious, still primed for the most part). His fall which sped it up was the whole drop from the muscle he put on.

nonsense. Calzaghe looked terrible in that fight, SD, many think B-HOP won. That is not really anything to brag about. He didn't really beat him, imo.

I dont think the Michalczewski bashing is all that fair...He was a pretty good fighter in his prime and it would have been one of Roy's best wins at the weight if he had fought him. I think that does affect his alltime lightheavy ranking IMO, but not compared to Joe, Im talking about the top tier guys who truly cleaned their divisions.

He was no more protected than Roy IMO, considering they have several common opponants.

    nevr had the toughest fights?
hopkins was a better opponent in his time(when fighting jones) than anyone calzaghe has ever fought
hopkins was on a par with hagler as a middleweight and would have beaten benn, and eubank quite convincingly i think which means roy would even easier in his prime in fact roy would have destroyed benn easily
remember the first round v calzaghe?
if roy was in his prime there would have been more rounds like that but i don't think he would have knocked out joe, but outboxed him throughout the fight
above super middle, jones was fighting above his natural weight and wasn't even in his prime when beating ruiz who was far bigger and 3 stone heavier

I'm not bashing him as a fighter, but I'm bashing the idea that he was the glaring omission from RJJ's resume that he is often made out to be. He was a good, solid WBO champion who lost to Gonzalez. Jones fought and beat at least three or four better fighters in his career. Jones v Michalczewski was not a superfight that the world was waiting for. It's the exact same situation as Calzaghe and Ottke, except at least RJJ cleaned up the other belts in the meantime without spending 9 years battering in tomato cans first.

He was finished by the time Gonzalez fight came about, in the Hall fights he was showing very clear signs of fading..Id liken that to the Tarver fights for Roy.

I dont think its exactly the same as the Ottke-Calzaghe thing..but the comparison can be made.

But Im not specifically having a go at you DINA..that was more just a broad statment because I find it frustrating to see how people totally overlook him and admonish him instead of Roy when both were at fault for that situation.
I think for Roy it does affect his specific alltime ranking at the weight IMO when you compare him to guys like Charles and Foster for instance who cleaned out their houses well and truly.

Roy has a few better names from his work at other weights but I think DM would have been at least on par with the best names he fought at 175. I would personally have considered him the best scalp there if he had fought him say around 98-2000 because Roy didnt preside over a particularly strong era.
