What makes someone being punched in the face really hard entertaining?

Generally speaking, fights where the fighters trade many blows are entertaining. But what is it that makes a punch more entertaining than say Joan Guzman ducking and moving away very quickly and skilfully?

What is the special ingredient a good hard punch to the face has, so far as boxing fans are concerned?

I don't know but it's definitely entertaining. It's like a car crash where when you drive by it, you can't help but look. Morbid curiosity I guess.

When we were born, we experienced 100 pounds of pressure per square inch on our skull during contractions. On top of that the average human birth canal is one inch smaller in diameter than the skull of the baby. Most babies pass out from this in the birth canal at least once. We were born with our heads punched in, so to speak. Traumatizing experiences early in life lead to recapitulation patterns which manifest, among other things, as fascination with experiences that remind one of the early trauma.

I don't think it's about guys getting punched, it's more about guys throwing punches.

Nobody likes to watch a Briggs fight.

Inchpunch explains it well but..........why are most women I know repulsed. I've got it. Most women have smaller heads and avoid passing out @ birth. It also explains why pin headed men don't like boxing and large headed women love it!!!!:think

sthomas - recapitulation patterns of course are also determined by many social factors. I can tell you from experience of working with clients that fascination with violence and violent tendencies lessens dramatically when birth trauma is healed. Combat sports simply offer us a way to be entertained by controlled violence, a harmless form of acting out this fascination.

It's not the punching, it's the fighting. I wouldn't be incredibly entertained just watching a guy standing there getting punched in the face again and again, but a good fight is a thing of beauty. Why? I have no clue. Because it's awesome?

Think of Barrera v Morales 1, the pure pride at stake, the willingness to take one to land one, all the punches in the book being thrown with the intent of a rattlesnake, the pure desire to win by KO, to not be beaten, but to beat your opponent, to take a beating and come back with better, to test yourself, to see how far you can push yourself, to overcome adversity when being beat upon, to dig down into those unknown places that youve never been before, to be tested...............Thats why I watch Barrera v Morales at least twice a month! And thats why I love Boxing

It's more fun to see guys engage. A defensive fighter can be entertaining, but only if they are laying the hurt on as they do it. It's why Roy Jones was so exciting to watch in his prime, he had the defense, the speed, and the POWER in one package.

Guzman lacks the 3rd component of the mix to be truly exciting. He's fun to watch, but he'll never be PPV material because of it.

Why do you think the heavyweight division is the only division that EVER gets national coverage in the States... it's because they put on the hurt.

True boxing fans can appreciate all the different skill sets, but mainstream audiences want to see guy lay out some punishment in explosive and gutsy fashion.

Also, it's why MMA is gaining market share, and it's not ground and pound and submissions that people watch for, it's the huge shots and one punch down he goes jump on him and pummel fights people like to talk about.

    How very poetic :patsch

Do you mean to lie under a rock all day and come out at night to hunt rats and mice?

 I must have had too many beers already! But what I meant is that every punch was delivered with the intention of KTFO of their opponent, it was beautiful to watch, and still is

its visceral. its primal. its "i have to kill you and take the food or i don't eat." its nature. its the most basic form of confrontation and decision making. its two entities boiled down to two tools apiece. its two souls facing each other saying "i'm stronger, i'm the better soul." its awesome.

:D Yeah I know what you mean, I'm just being a git.

Barrera Morales I is one of my favorite fights, and round 5 is one of my all time favorite rounds.

III was great too, II was a bit of a stinker. Notice how the judges got the first two resulta completely the wrong way round? Awarding the fight to the wrong guy both times, at least it evened itself out and the third was about right with the scoring.

Still, Barerra Morales I & II Judges scorecards :patsch:patsch:patsch
