What makes you think that Margo can do it?

Cotto is a truly great pressure fighter. In the mold of Chavez and Duran. He has great boxing ability which he mixes in with his pressuring style. He has a solid frame and every punch he throws takes something from you. The top level fighters that Cotto has fought (Malignaggi, Quintana, Judah, Mosely) have all been boxers or boxer punchers. He has always matched up with them physically and has done well against them because the boxer verse pressure fighter style match up is one which favours the pressure fighter.

Against MArgarito however it would appear that Cotto has forfeited his strongest style. He is conceding the role of the pressure fighter to Margarito. When too pressure fighters meet logic dictates that the fighter that is better able to execute his style is the victor. So in essence by electing to be the boxer Cotto is saying that of the two of them Margarito is the one that can better execute that pressuring style.

In electing to box however Cotto is creating a style dynamic which favours Margarito (a.k.a. pressure fighter beats Boxer). If this is the case then MArgarito already has the advantage going in. And he will win the fight so long as he has fast enough feet and accurate enough/fast enough punches to effectively pressure and damage Cotto.

So the dilemma for me is how to tell whether or not MArgarito has the goods to do this. Part of me doesn't think he does. I've watch the guy and he's a slow ass *******. But he's effective.

To beat Cotto Margo doesn't need to be a great pressure fighter just a dam good one.

The part of me that thinks Margo will at least make this a close fight things that based on how long he's been a champion and how well he dealt with Cintron (a style match up that traditionally would favour the puncher) you'd have to think that he is at the very least Dam good at what he does. Right? And therefore good enough to make the inherent advantages that Cotto has conceded work for him. Right?

Well unfortunately the more I think about this fight the more I feel its not going to live up to the hype and that its going to be a world class schooling by Cotto. Pretty sure he's going to cruse to a wide UD with maybe one or two tough spots...maybe. Part of me worries that there is going to be a real difference in skills when these two meet on Saturday night.

Everyone that has gotten to Cotto has been fast. Cotto actually has a very good defense when he's defending. The times where he has gotten hit were when both he and the other guy were throwing a punch and the other guys punch got there first. I don't think that Margo's gonna be able to make that happen. And I'd have to believe that Cotto is slick enough to handle Margo's pressure.

Sure he might be hurt once or twice. Most fighters are in a fight. I think more then anything the fight will lack the type of ebbs and flows, which create real drama. So even if MArgarito does well it'll be like watching a fight with the same story every round. Fighter "A" has his moments but never does enough to win the round....round after round after round. Fighter "B" wins a clear decision.

Cause really thatÂ’s the best case scenario for Cotto and I have a feeling he is head and shoulders enough above the much slower Margarito to be able to pull it off.

What I want is for some one to make a really good case for MArgarito. What is it about this guy that makes you think he has fast enough feet and accurate enough/fast enough punches to be able to trouble Cotto. Or what makes you think that he can apply intelligent enough pressure to counter Cotto's intelligent boxing. Cause if he can't then the only punch that I see him troubling Cotto with is that wicked uppercut of his. And the only real hope that he has of catching up to Cotto with anything else in his arsenal is if Cotto runs into stamina problems. So basically his only hope for a win looks to me like: A) hope to Christ Cotto has stamina problems and B) try to end it with an uppercut. A strategy based on the other guy gassing out or that relies on one punch might work against more limited fighters but against Cotto, a thinking fighter who has demonstrated great versatility, it isn't going to work.

The case they're making for Margarito is that his chin will hold up and Cotto will eventually crumble under all the pressure.

The thing is if Cotto weathers the storm, and he will, then he'll be fine. Margarito's only hope is that his tactics to overwhelm will work. If it doesn't... good luck trying to find a way to win.

Yeah I know and to me this just doesn;t seem strong enough to me. I mean my favourite style is the pressure fighting style. I will almost always be cheering for a pressure fighter over a boxer. But I just don't see MArgo having the proper technique to make it effective. I mean from what I've seen he doesn't really cut the ring off that well. And the reason that he is able to throw somemany punches is because the guys infront of him are equally limited in there movement.

I can see someone putting him above a prime Oscar after its all said and done....after he beats margo though maybe thats a bit premature.

A couple of things though. I don't know what you are talking about Mosely being gun-shy? In the fight that I watched Mosely hit him with everything accept the Kitchen sink. Sure he didn't pressure him. Thats because thats not how he rolls.

More to the point though, Many many time's I have seen guys who normally throw rediculous amounts of punches slow there work rate down when they finally get in the ring with a guy that has good movement. Cause you have to been in a position to throw 100 punches per round in order to actually do it. I don't see this guy inteligently cutting off the ring in a way that will allow him to get that many punches off. He's capable of doing all the things that you say but he's got to get himself into position to do it first.

I think Margarito will simply take all of Cotto's punches all night long and make Cotto suffer non stop in return ! Margarito will throw close to 100 punches per round on average and swarm Cotto all night so that Cotto can't stay away from the ropes every now and then + get into a so called street fight !! Margarito will shock many observers by winning via TKO in round 11 !!!

You see, there it is, and there it isn't, as far as what you're saying. Cotto has yet to prove his greatness in terms of actual content and ability. He hasn't gotten this far by using cunning or a complex portfolio the way that some people try and make it seem, Cotto has gotten this far on sheer power, force, and strength. Cotto has simply outgunned virtually every opponent in tit-for-tat type battles where he takes turns exchanging with his opposition - only Miguel is bigger and stronger by far, so the opposition doesn't have a natural chance.

I told it once and I tell it again. Actually, this is quite simple and still strong for o_money to buy: Cotto has tremendous punch power and since he's compact and explosive, he might get to Margo and make his knees jerk... But suppose Margo holds, stands up and delievers back - Margarito can keep punches flying on Miguel and not only on powerful bursts, he may well overwhelm Miguel with so many shots that not only Miguel but anybody could might well not take.

Margarito is a ruthless SOB and will not go down from a head shot - Cotto needs to stick to the game plan and box, and work the body when he gets inside. This fight will have its moments, but I think Miguel controls the pace.

Because Cotto's been there before, he has shown that he has the ability to get up and come back to knock you out.

And did I mention those lowblows too.:yep

Seriously I have trust that his chin will hold up.

Yeah that the guys that worry me the most against Cotto are the ones that can take his **** and hold a size advantage over him. Because realistically he;s a small 147 lber.

And I never said he had to be the most technically gifted guy. All I said is that he just needs to be dam good.

First off buddy this is the first time you've responed to any of my post. So I don't think you've told me anything before. Secondly your not even responding to my question. Did I ever say Cotto was going to wobble MArgo? Did I ever ask you how Margo was going to deal with Cotto's power? No.

And frankly I think Cotto's punching power is over rated. His ability to hit you with clean shots, over and over and over again is what messes guys up the most.

What I'm asking is what makes you think Margo is going to be able to apply his pressure effectively? What has he done in the past to make you think he's got the goods to hang with Cotto?
