Well Mark I questioned the question because apparently you've elevated Smith to just about ATG status because of the nature of the question, therefore I had to question if the question was a serious question.
By the way there were 3 British Middleweights alone who would have beaten Smith.
Len Harvey, Jock McAvoy and Randy Turpin all fought and beat light heavyweights and were much higher calibre fighters than Smith.

Interesting Question, would the fight take place at the middleweight limit? Smith is a huge super middle not sure he would be able to make the middleweight limit. As far as Lalonde no he lacked the skill set that Smith seems to have but what he was lacking in skill he sure made up for in toughness. At this point in Smith's young career would be a very interesting fight! I'd Lean towards Lalonde by stoppage but who knows! Smith has alot of hope really enjoy watching him but its early in his career the best is yet to be seen!
