For me it was bruno winning the decision against mccall. I'm only 23 and I was obviously quite young at the time of the fight but there was no way of escaping the hype. Bruno was a national treasure more known for his losses than his victories and for him to finally emerge victorious in a big fight was great. There was also the furore surrounding eubank and prince naz, it was a good time for english boxing and although benn and lewis were much more successful, they never quite endeared with me the same. I remember when they announced his defence against tyson and the fear surrounding the event. Great memories and even as a youngster they stayed with me. That was the hook that caught me and turned me into a boxing fan. What about you guys, what fight or fighter or moment turned you into a boxing fan? :good
mine was recently enough,2007,watching mayweather vs hatton.i was 15 at the time and i thought the build up and spectacle was the greatest thing ever
Ali & Howard Coselle. - All the pre-fight banter leading up to (the incredible) Ali-Frazier I. It's one of the very few reasons I'm glad I'm old! (that, and rap music.)
Yeah that was unreal. Great buildup to the event and like most people from the manchester area I was convince hatton would defeat floyd that night.
Every kid -- and their dads 'n brothers -- fought amateur or pro in my neighborhood. They were gym rats by the time they were ten.
Oddly enough, the two most vivid memories of getting to watch boxing with my dad and his friends were seeing the Bowe/Golota incidents, "daddy why's he keep hitting him in the balls?", and the Tyson/Holyfield rematch. I was young at the time and wasn't allowed to watch much more after those incidents in recent proximity. When I came back to the sport the man in my AV gave me something to enjoy. :good
Watching Hajime no Ippo when i was in my teen years, back in the day. Got me to watch a few Mayweather, DLH, Hoya fights and i got hooked.
