Seeing highlights of Tyson whoopin' ass and taking names back in the late 80's. I was just a kid but I was hooked. Been following the sport ever since.
Watching Dempsey vs. Marciano... ...ok, I was playing as Dempsey against my brother who was Marciano, on an old Megadrive game. It seemed to last forever and I was hooked on that game from then, which then got me watching real fights. I must have only been about 5 at the time but as my dad used to box and is a huge fan, I saw lots of the sport from an early age.
I started gradually getting into boxing. When I started training, I would watch it more often though to study it and then after a while I fell in love :love
I liked to watch Roy Jones Jr, Toney and De la Hoya in the 90's, but I started watching more seriously 10 years ago when Eric Lucas won his SMW belt against Catley. A great and humble champion from my province.
I was actually an MMA/UFC fan first. Then i watched Marquez vs. Pacquiao 2 with my dad, uncle and their friend. The ferocity of Pac vs Marquez's timing had me on the edge of my seat. Next day my dad asked me "so lemme ask you, have you ever seen an MMA fight that good?" IMO, I haven't. Boxing's been my favorite sport ever since.
For me it was Ray Mancini on ABC. My passion was reinvigorated when Boxed Ears posted this This content is protected
Watched my first fight with my dad, Lewis vs Akinwande I think. Then I just kept watching fights with him and eventually became a bigger boxing fan than him getting US fights on VHS.
The Trinidad-De La Hoya fight got me into boxing. All the hype and everybody watching the fight really stands out, and they was my introduction to boxing. Pretty much since then been following the sport. Then I latched onto fighters like Hatton, Morales, Barrera, and Gatti. Hatton was always my favorite because I saw him as a prospect, as a contender, champion, and then retirement. Hell of a roller coaster ride.
Well, honestly the Rocky movies probably first got me a bit interested in boxing. Rocky III was a popular film on HBO when I was like 7 or 8. When I was 9 years old, I watched Hagler-Hearns and that amazed me! I thought all boxing was that great. Then the Mike Tyson years came and I was more or less hooked, at least as a casual fan. By the time the Bowe-Golota fights came about, I was a die hard.
Tyson. I believe I would have gotten into the sport regardless and my first real boxing memory was Hagler-Hearns. But Tyson sparked an interest that has remained with me.
i wasnt a big fan intill i was hammered one night and boxing was on and it was quintana schooling paul williams. Its was a great fight and i was pumped for the rematch and we all know what happened lol. I moved to the country and stopped going to the bars etc.. I have every major channel in canada to watch boxing. HBO .superchannel, fight channel, tsn
No event for me ... I've always been interested in violent sports, though since our family never had a TV so I never saw much -- just the occasional bit of WWE, or something like that. One of my mates (who still swaggers round Classic) was hugely into boxing: he went on ESB, watched really old boxing footage on YouTube during a lot of his free classes, and so on. I didn't need any encouragement to hop on the bandwagon.
I bet rocky got a lot of people from that generation into boxing. I'm surprised how many people said bowe/golota, never occured to me that would be anyones reason. Brutal wars tho, really good fights.
