I never rooted against Ali. In fact my first correct fight pick was Clay over Liston. Making that pick had nothing to do with analytical ability. I was only 7 years old. What really happened is that at that age I was a huge pro wrestling fan, and it was extremely popular in my little corner of the world. Unlike most young boys I never rooted for the baby faces. I liked the heels, and Ali talked and acted just like they did. It was many years later that I learned that Ali intentionally modeled his persona after the heel wrestlers of that era.
When Calzaghe Dominated Lacy, That got me into watching it because I met Enzo Maccarinelli in swansea once and thought nothing of it but after the Lacy fight I began watching all of Joes fights, then watched , Hopkins, Jones and ended up going through the divisions and even found out my dads friend fought Naseem Hamed and Scott Harrisson. Miguel Mathews, he pulled the ropes down in Hameds 4th fight and made him fall on his ass during his entrance but got TKO'd in the 3rd round and he beat Scott Harrison by a Technical Decision or TKO cant remember which
As a young kid the vague pride I had that a British guy (Lewis) was the best in the world. Then the Rocky films. Eventually watching fights on Youtube brought me up to present day fighters (Lewis-Klitschko was a big part of me becoming a Klitschko fan). That was about 2007. Hardcore fan by '08.
I was in the army stationed in hawaii in 1984.I started to dabble in boxing a little,i saw the replay of the recent fight with hagler and duran and was impressed with my dads favorite fighter roberto duran who started as a 135lb champ but almost beat the fearsome 160lb champ hagler.i also started glancing at the ring and ko magazines at the px.Little did i know i was gradually getting hooked. Then a big fight was coming up it was Duran vs Hearns.I started asking people about Hearns and based on what the other soldiers told me about Hearns and his boxing ability and great power that hearns would win on points.well fight night came and i didnt think for a minute that i would get to see it,but i was walking around on the balconey and heard this loud yelling and screaming coming from a room.So i knocked on the door to see what was going on and someone answered and said the fight was on and do i want to come to see it?So i did,and it was the 2nd round of hearns-duran.Hearns was so fast and devastating in his 2nd round ko that i said i aint ever gonna miss another hearns fight again.thats when offically became hooked.
Became hooked with Tyson's comeback, De La Hoya becoming a superstar, around about the same time '96. But I've always had a bit of an interest as a young kid, my dad used to tell me stories about Ali which peeked my intrigue, and I'd read and hear about the exploits of JCC and Tyson in the late 80s, it was easier to follow back then in the mainstream
When i was little, maybe 5 or 6, i used to watch Tyson fights with my dad on our illegal satelite hook up in the garage :rofl I remember seeing Tyson destroy Razor Ruddock and pretending to be him at school for the next month
Damn, the common denominator for people 30 and under seems to be Tyson. Tyson and his reign of terror in the 80s is what got me initially in the sport. He was like a super hero to me and many of my friends in grade school. I may have been young but I had enough presence of mind to know that Tyson was somebody not to ****ed with. I made it priority to be in front of the tv when he fought.
Yeah sounds like a lot of people have tyson to thank for getting them into boxing! I mean I remember the hype in 96 when he challenged bruno's title so ten years before when he was an undefeated monster it must have been immense!
