Personally I feel there's a plethora of names missing from his resume. Such as Camacho Rosario Randall Quartey Norris Carr Trinidad (Even tho they fought, They should've fought earlier. Like around 96 or 97 when still prime) Yori boi campas
You missed off Manning Galloway, Charles Murray and Darryl Tyson. More fighters that Sweet Pea shamelessly ducked.
I wouldn't be so dismissive with this OP. He makes some valid points. The main fight he didn't have that he should have had was JC Chavez at 135 lbs in, say 1989. That would have been a mega fight and more competitive than their actual fight later on. However, Rosario had been beaten by Chavez. Camacho had moved up to 140 lbs by the time Pernell was a top 10 contender. Taylor was a stable mate so I can see why they never fought. Pernell was at 147 lbs. by the time Randall beat Chavez. On the other hand, Yes, he could have fought Quartey either as a challenger or in a unification. And, Yes, he could have fought Norris at 154 in a unification. I do believe the Duvas were selective with Pernell's opposition when he was 147 and 154 lb. champ. I see your point that unification fights against the like of Quartey/Trinidad/Norris would have been attractive.
Sweet Pea’s record is above reproach. That said, I wouldn’t have minded seeing him undress Ike and hang another loss on Oba “I wish my parents conceived me 5-10 years later than they did” Carr. Yori Boy was an honest fighter who falls short of the top levels. A past his best Carr beat the brakes off him...for that I’m glad he and Pea’s paths never crossed.
Pea had a fight scheduled against Quartey at one point...but he failed a drug test for coke and was subsequently suspended. I kinda remember reading something about Papa Trinidad and Don King keeping Tito away from Whitaker in the mid/late 90s. Or was it they didn’t want to do business with the Duvas? I can’t remember...my mind is shot. I love Tito...but I definitely feel that the time it took to finally make that fight happen in 99 only benefited Trinidad. By that point Pea was 35 and had some serious miles on him...whereas Tito was prime. I also wish the Chavez fight happened at 140 and a couple years prior...but whaddya gonna do. I see it playing out similarly to how it eventually did in 93...albeit at a slightly higher level.
I don’t know the exact details, but King and the Duvas having problems working together sounds believable. I think Trinidad did try to sue King around 1995 to get out of his contract and get bigger fights. 1995-98 were kind of wasted years for Tito.
