There's a lot of opinion flying around tonight but where do we see him going from here? We were told he moved to Matchroom for the big fights, so that needs to happen now, the time is right. His defences at SFW were dreadful, since he's stepped up I personally feel that all 4 title fights have been credible and sensible (to varying degrees) at their respective times, but he needs to step up from that again now. I think that Vasquez or Abril (and Broner, but that won't happen in September) are the only two (/three) credible fights for him at this moment in time. With some good results for other Scottish boxers tonight I think that Septembers card has massive potential. The ball is in Eddie's court!
Probably a shithouse voluntary. Problem with Vasquez and Abril is they'll make for awkward, close fights which won't exactly have the arena rocking.
Probably a rematch with the guy who was shutting him out. Vasquez, Abril, and Broner are similar (but more polished) challenges and would all take him to school as bad as tonight. A rematch is good experience for him and we'll see if he can adjust now that he knows what he'll be facing. If he doesn't rematch Gonzalez it'll be a slight step below Khan ducking Prescott. But I'll always like Burns more than Khan.
I think they're all very different challenges, certainly to JG, they'll all be much easier to prepare for as well. I think Ricky can beat Vasquez and Abril, not so sure about Broner. Sadly JG won't get a rematch, as much as I'd like to see it!
Would like to see him against Gamboa, assuming Gamboa beats Darley Perez next month which will get him ranked in WBO top 15.
They'll talk about Vazquez, but if you ask me the most important thing for Ricky at this stage, especially after tonight's "loss-win" is keeping that win streak going. Eddie is a realist, he knows tonight was more than just a close shave but he also realizes there are fighters out there that will clock up the rounds and do the 12 rounds as if its compulsory. Thats the danger. Even Ricky's promoter knows the likes of Vazquez, Abril, Gamboa, Broner (less likely now unless Ricky moves up) are even more dangerous than tonight. Eddie knows all about Broner, after seeing the demolition job on Rees. Nobody has ever beat Rees so easy like that. Boxing wise tonight, Ricky was outboxed and that was the big problem, forget about workrate, Ricky was outboxed and there are better boxers out there than Jose Gonzalez, there is another level up from that. As good as Gonzalez proved to be tonight. So Eddie will definitely talk about those big fights, because it keeps building Ricky as something bigger than he is. It doesnt mean that he is going to make those fights yet. So IMHO, the most obvious fights that will be made, are the domestic scraps like Rees and Simpson. It puts Ricky back down a bit (dunno how he would feel about that) but keeps the winning going. He will make easy work of both of them as he did Kevin Mitchell. Its all about building Ricky and gaining momentum before taking those danger fights. Eddie is all about momentum, he said it himself. Putting Ricky straight back in another danger fight after tonight would be medically unsafe and a bit stupid.
I like this idea. Gamboa would present the boxing skills but Burns could always put him down. At least it'd be a good fight against a name opponent. I'll still be pissed if there isn't a rematch though.
I like the idea of the Gamboa fight as well, don't know how much he has left, seems disillusioned with the sport. If Ricky boxed sensibly would be a big ask for Gamboa to come over and win IMO, Burns would would rough him up as well. Gonzalez was really talented, many fighters would have struggled with him, no reason to rule Burns out in fights from now that he would obviously do better in moving forward. Wouldn't mind Bogere, Rees or DeMarco, Vazquez would be problematic.
