what next for ricky burns?

A change of attitude in terms of his tactics ( go back to what won him world titles) or retire.

Ricky is vastly becoming a gate keeper at fringe world level and, for me, this is due more to his tactics rather than noticeable physical degradation.

I'm joking, it must be hard for Burn's to get himself up for a fight like that after big world title fights not that long ago but where have the basics gone?

Maybe Billy Nelson can shed some light on it, what has happened to all the good things Ricky used to do? The jab? Has Ricky lost his?

The slightly worrying thing was although what he was doing was enough to have him winning the fight he didn't adjust, he didn't give himself a little space to start snapping out a jab and work off of it, he was constantly crowding his work. Burns fought like a brawler and mauler and it really doesn't suit him.

Sims may well be a good trainer, I'm not in his gym watching what goes on and I haven't trained a world champion but I think his style of training and tactical awareness is all wrong for Ricky, it might well work for others but trainer and boxer need to come together and fit, it does not seem like it's working in my opinion.

 

He wont retire, he said in an interview he loves fighting so I don't think he will stop regardless of the level he is at, I think he will probably look to world level and look to gain a higher world ranking with his next fight.

The thing that gets pre Billy Nelsopn Ricky was fringe British class, he then clearly grafted his ***** off and obviously listened to his trainer and won 2 world titles, then he stopped listening to his trainer, has got worse since (though he went up a level in competition so think he would have fell short anyway) and moved trainers and still dont listen and is getting worse. Nice guy everyone says but is he thick ? As surely he must notice when he has listened to his trainer(s) he has done much better. If I was Sims and he would not listen I would part company with him. Even when Andy Scott asked him on Sky why didnt you not listen to your trainer he looked lost and did not know how to answer it.

 

He needs the money, surely that's why he soldiers on.


If hearn can make him some dough and he cashes out in a 'Hearn 50/50' against campbell or someone similar, that'll be nice to see.

 

I know you listen to all Joe Gallagher's fighters they all say the same he is the boss, we do as we are told, look at the results. As a boxer surely if you don't listen because u don't value your trainers opinions u are best leaving them and if its just because your arrogant and think you know best like Ricky someone close to you should give you a kick up the **** and tell you it straight.

 

I think by the sounds of it Ricky needs the money so will fight on. There's nothing wrong with fighting on, but he's not at world level anymore. Maybe fight at British/Commonwealth level for a few fights before a fight with Campbell for decent money.

 

From a selfish point of view i would love it for Ricky to retire.

I just hate watching the guy fight these days, he's unbelievably boring and always ends up in a horrible atmosphere killing s****py fight. Definitely deserves to be much further down the card.

 

I would love to see Ricky get another crack at a world title as someone else said I don't think he's shot because he fought well against Figueroa who no one gave him a hope in hell against I just think he can't get up for these types of fights but he needs to start listening to Tony, The first time he stepped off with a 3 punch combo he stopped the guy.

He isn't rich so why would he retire? His health isn't in imminent danger and he likes what he does. Who cares about records? I'd rather retire with cash to set me up for the rest of my life than retire skint but knowing I've only lsot 5 fights....

He looed poor though and his approach to the fight was bizarre. I think Ricky over achieved for the talent he had but that was due to his hunger and drive but that isn't there any more.
