Ricky obviously needs the cash, because i cannot see any other reason for him continuing to box. He looked terrible for most of the fight, but did seem to get himself together in the last few rounds, and got the job done. Thing that worries me most, is that Ricky fights like a puncher, and he's far from heavy handed. Surely any trainer worth his salt would teach Ricky to use his physical advantages, and not stand in the pocket trying to blast people out. Its easy to be critical, when you're on the outside looking in, but unless he gets a trainer that knows the job, and can get him to listen, then he's just going backwards.
Harrison and Nelson are the elite Scottish coaches, both won world titles and domestic titles, Terry hasn't the experience, knowledge or ability to train a fighter like burns, what has he done in the professional sphere for a top fighter to consider him?
No way will he retire as many have stated for financial reasons. He has neglected the basic fundamentals that got him world titles.The hard work aspect aside his best boxing working behind a very good jab.
he is a coach known for telling his boxers how it is even if it isn't what they want to hear. he has worked alongside freddy roach and with alex arthur at euro level so not exactly a novice. just a change but without being away from everyone, but harrison would be my 1st choice but he is getting on a bit and hasn't been producing much lately either.
Burns is nowhere near world level at the moment. He still looks scared and never looks like he has a game plan. Lets be honest Saturdays fight was a stinker and he made hard work of a very limited fighter. Sorry to say it, be is he just a gate keeper now
In my opinion, Rickys hearts just not in it anymore. I think he changed trainer, not due to a couple of losses, but hoping that a change of trainer and scenery would give him back his motivation and enthusiasm. It clearly hasn't worked, and I think Ricky is still fighting as he's got bills to pay like everyone else, and its the most lucrative option available to him. He shouldn't be put anywhere near a world champ as is, he'd get humiliated.
Going with your fighters to Roaches gym isn't working with him, which Roach fighters has Terry helped work in the corner? Harrison has worked with Weir,Harrison,Arthur,Limmond and many more.
i wouldn't want to lie by mentioning fighters but I'm sure terry was based over there for a while and worked with freddy roach. that was before he had a gym in edinburgh and he used what he learnt with roach when he did.
Professional boxing is the hardest sport...period. Fighters who make it through this game start out as beginners and improve to a level where they reach their peak. Afterwards they usually decline. Most boxers leave the sport the hard way, where instead of retiring with a win, they are battered and bested out of the ring. Ricky Burns is at the stage where a proper world level boxer will do this to him. I loved the guy for what he brought to Scottish boxing but he will never improve. This fight game is slowly taking it out of him. Fantastic fighter and person, however Ricky you are on the slide, retire before it is too late.
I doubt hed be world champ again hed struggle at euro unless he drew an easy opp and could still win a comonwealth or british imo. Can he afford to retire? Hes probably trying to build his bank acc back up and hes still probably been paid well by hearn considering.
Ricky fought very offensively on Sat night & if going to stay & train in Scotland Harrison would be a very good choice of trainer as has British, Commonwealth, Euro & World experience & would educate Burns in coming forward & fighting on the inside more effectively in my opinion......
I'd personally like to see Ricky retire. His performances of late have been absolutely garbage and he is on the verge of becoming a gatekeeper for the other lightweights in the Matchroom stable. I can understand why he'd choose to fight on and good luck to him but I think I will give any of his future fights a miss as he has become a terrible fighter to watch.
