Sure, Ward went in with his head and caught Kessler but when you get roughed up you have to be rough back and not think you're above the dirty stuff. (e.g. Calzaghe v Bika). Kessler was beaten fair and square by a quicker and more skilled opponent. He went into the Super Six as something of an unknown quantity and automatically assumed the mantle of tournament favourite - largely based on his loss to Calzaghe. What's interesting is how he will approach fights now that his aura has been dispelled? He is no longer the main man in the Super Six. Being beaten twice by the same strategy is no coincidence and he now has to re-establish himself on the bigger stage on merit - instead of beating a series of B level fighters in Denmark or Germany. I think he liked being the centre of attention, even though he didn't do anything special to get into that position. He's a chilled out guy, he enjoys his life in Monaco riding around on his bike - and more importantly he's not used to being pushed in terms of being taught about the fight game. He's Mikkel Kessler with the cool tattoos - people come to him, they write about him, take photos of him and interview him. Now that he's lost his titles twice as soon as he's faced top-level opposition, I think his ego is hurting. To be honest, I don't think he has enough fire to turn it around.
It was only when I really started studying Kessler in the lead up to this fight that I realised how average he was, how he nearly always went backwards when someone started hitting him, and how he immobile he was. I wasn't blown away by Ward either but because Kessler seemed tailor made for him, I thought Ward would sneak it. I think he's finished.
He will fight on... it's not like he's starting a family or is running around with a proffesor IQ. He wants to fight and he will hopefully get that against very fan freindly, unskilled, slowmode boxer Froch.
get a new corner, some of the advice he was getting both in that fight and the calzaghe fight is indicative of his lack of knowledge about top level boxing "hit him mikkel, use the left" wtf? a perfect trainer for his style would be manny steward as he seems to know how to train a stand up box puncher
Yes man i always thought from his style he fight like wladimir klitschko just with a better chin;D But i dont think kessler can improve much more things at this stage of his career!
Why do the losers of this first round suddenly get the treatment like they have no hope? Taylor I could deal with because they are bigger issues involved, but Kessler? This guy will maul Froch and Taylor and could possibly become the points leader. Mikkel will come back from this. I see the second round being full of KOs with Dirrell, Taylor, and Froch all seeing stars.
I too think Kessler will train his ass off, adopt some new tactics and live for the day he can meet Ward in the 1/2 finals again, and I don't see Ward escaping with the same tactics again...
His initial reaction to the loss wasn't far from denial. His approach in the Ward fight was naive to say the least.
