I think Chambers is a pretty respectable HW, with convincing wins over an unbeaten Alexander Dimitrenko, Samuel Peter, Calvin Brock and Dominick Guinn.

Second tier wins over plenty of good spoilers as well. Robert Hawkins, Cisse Salif (Lost a SD to Tua a few years ago) Ross Puritty, and Louis Monaco, and having a very competitive fight with one of the best in the world vs Povetkin while not in peak shape.

I more then likely respect him more then most because of his size disadvantage. Giving away a half foot in height almost 50 pounds against Dimitrenko is pretty huge.

    -------------------------------------------------------------------------

He's certainly not as accomplished as the likes of a Jerry Quarry, and never will be, but what HW of yesteryear would you say he's comparable to quality wise?

I don't know if I'd say there's much of a difference between Chambers and a Chuvalo.

Chuvalo certainly had a far greater single attribute then Chambers (Chin) but I can't think of any outstanding win George ever had. An ancient Cleveland Williams, Willi Besmanoff, Doug Jones.

If I had to pick I'd say Chuvalo accomplished more then Chambers but not by too terribly much.

    Thoughts?

This is an unexpected classic thread for sure. I'm struggling to think of a HW who is really all that similar. I like Chambers, but I've always had an affinity for the smaller, faster heavies. Chambers has terrific hand speed and his odd but effective defensive style with all the bending straight back (sometimes quickly jerking back, and sometimes leaning like a ropeless rope-a-dope) is...interesting. They may amount to similarly successful careers, Chuvalo and Chambers, but I see nothing really in common stylistically. Chambers sort of seems to need kicked in the ass to be aggressive. His temperament is funny like that. He may still become a champion, even at Cruiserweight. I think his power is underrated. He's got some good pop even though he's no puncher. If the aggression level got bumped up a few notches, I have little doubt that his kayo percentage would be higher and he'd have beaten Povetkin handily, imo. I thought he was superior in that fight and just gave it away on lack of aggression. I think he's as technically skilled a contender as we have, actually. A lot of comparisons to Chris Byrd but I can't think of a fighter offhand from much earlier a time I'd have closely compared him to. Anyway, I'm just babbling now. Interesting thread though.

Pick your own fasted handed, defensive minded fighter with modest power. Maybe you could say Jimmy Bivins, though I think Chambers has a little more talent.

Hard to think of anyone, Byrd seems to be the best comparison so far.

I've always thought he'd make a very good Cruiser with his frame and style, and as you said...he's very small compared to many of the HW's today which I also respect him for.

Whoever said Tony Tubbs hit the nail on the head. Skilled technicians with very fast hands, tendency to show up overweight. Very Similiar.

I was more trying to ask who Chambers is comparable to quality wise, close to a certain fighter... Not styles wise.

    Quality Wise:

    Hmmm....

    What about Roland Lastarza?

Of course if you listen to Mendoza, he will claim Quality wise Chambers is better than Jimmy Bivins

I'd say that's a pretty good comparison, though Lastarza might of had more potential to become something more.

I see the similarities too, but Tubbs is a class above Chambers in terms of skills.

I think Eddie Chambers is slightly better than Chris Byrd.
And Tubbs a bit better than Chambers.
