Could have dethroned heavyweight champ Larry Holmes in '85? No Charles, no Tunney, talking light heavyweight champions only....
Not many at all. Spinks won/kept the title away from Holmes controversialy as it is, but that is a different matter. Maybe a game Archie Moore, which I still highly doubt.
The rematch was controversial, not Spinks' title winning effort. The only thing controversial about that was what Holmes said at the press conference afterwards.
Southpaw Michael Moorer when he had just moved up to heavywt and was knocking people out. On his best night and Holme's worst night, he might have won (just keep Teddy Atlas out of the corner and trying to take credit for the win).
Maybe. But remember,Larry wasn't the kind of puncher that could paralyze a Man with 1 or 2 shots, and Larry wasn't a good finisher.Conn was quick on his Feet, had quick Hands and could Box well.I'd give Him a good shot.
A light heavy version of Toney would have to be a very good chance. Harry Greb would make an interesting fight, as would Joe Choynski. Saying that, I would be surprised if any of these ended up beating Holmes.
Verry verry few. We have said champions so that rules out Langford Charles and Tunney who are perhaps the three best light heavyweight candidates. Moore and Conn would have a shot as others have said. Throw in Tommy Loughran for good measure.
What, apart from your own opinion and Larry's book, do you have to back the controversial claim up? I'm talking about the first fight, by the way.
Very interesting pick...that Tommy Loughran against the older Holmes.... Moore is interesting as well...but I think even the older Holmes dictates with the jab against Moore. Conn and Loughran are somewhat similar...but I feel Loughran could stay within a disciplined approach...Very difficult propositon though.
At that stage Holmes had lost a fair amount of his speed so someone like Loughran or Jones could win although they might get stopped late. The best bet for me would be Conn.
I always thought the first Spinks win over Holmes was close but fair and legit. Is there some feeling differently?
I think the '85 Larry Holmes defeats every lightheavy champion (except one). Moore presents some problems, but I feel the size differential and Holme's jab are the keys to his dictating the pace of their fight. Holmes W15 Loughran and the older Holmes would engage in an jabfest, but Larry would start investing in body shots own the stretch of the bout...If Loughran elected to stay away, Holmes would still control the tempo due to his size.Holmes W15. Michael Moorer is an interesting pick as well. Holmes may be surprised at Moorer's power at first...but Larry has pretty much seen it all. I think he would catch Moorer in a lapse in concentration in the 12 round. Holmes TKO 12. Roy Jones? this could be really toughdue to Jones' speed and unorthadox moves...Spink's unorthaox approach helped him immensely against holmes I felt...Holmes has to catch him to beat him...Ruiz touched him with a few rights...Holmes could possibly do it...but he couldn't pull the trigger against Spinks, until the 14th...Spinks survived...Jones won't...Holmes TKO14 That's how I feel....Opinions?
