Yes, he had a very good win over old Tarver - credit to him. And yes, he (maybe) beat Glen Johnson in a life and death fight. But Bernard Hopkins beat a 37 years old Tarver, not a 40 years old Tarver, even more convincingly. Chad Dawson is very good, but I still pick B-hop over him. He isn't developed enough and has too many flaws to beat a seasoned pro like Bernard. Bernard beats him by closed decision, if the Calzaghe fight didn't age his reflexes.
Hopkins though he is old and has a couple of close recent losses is still a dangerous fight for Dawson. If Hopkins can get past Pavlik then he would definately be a good scalp for Dawson but not a sure W If Hopkins beats Pavlik then I'd pick Hopkins over Awesome Dawson
Funny, he just won a decision over an athlete many doubted he could defeat and already we are discounting his victory? People are unique. "Great job on humbling the loquacious Tarver", would be a better comment. I guess my world is different.
discounting his victory? no. Sorry i didn't know that beating Tarver made Dawson invincible. and btw check the odds Dawson was almost a 3/1 favorite. maybe your world really is different.
Yeah i probably would lean towards Hopkins ever so slightly. I think Dawson would find it quite hard to hit Hopkins. Against Tarver he was throwing quick, crisp hard combo's that looked great but a lot were just hitting Tarver's gloves. Hopkins is harder to hit than Tarver. The only way Dawson wins is if Hopkins tires badly.
I think Dawson is maybe not getting as much credit for beating Tarver as it was blatantly obvious that Tarver was shot. Im not trying to have a go at Dawson as i like him and think he could crack the top ten p4p list in the future but beating the Tarver we seen saturday night is not overly impressive. Tarver is a shell of the fighter he used to be and i believe most of the top ten LH could have beaten Tarver on sarurday night.
It is obvious for anyone that watched both fights that the Tarver that showed up against Dawson was a better conditioned Tarver that came in against Dawson. The Tarver that came in against Hopkins had to cut down in weight (some 40-45lbs) after bulking up for the Rocky movie. Today's version of Dawson would be too much for Hopkins, including the version who came in against Tarver. Stylistically, he is a bad match up for Bernard; too fast, too young, too strong. Reference Hopkins vs Taylor I and II.
Taylor didn't do anything in his fights with B-hop. It's just that B-hop gave up rounds because he was weight drained at 160 as he became older. the move up in weight refreshed him so you can't conclude from the Taylor fights. Believe me, B-hop easily beats Taylor today if the fight takes place at 170 pounds.
Hopkins would be more than happy to get it on with Chad and test that in-fighting after having seen him against Glen. Happens that Bernard is way up there where he is wanted to battle with the most interesting rising stars such as Pavlik. I don't know what Chad can offer Bernard to make him come to him and other than those IBF/IBO titles - at this point, it's Pavlik and in case B-Hop wins, then it has to be a whole lot of money.
Hopkins doesn't throw enough punches to beat Dawson. He can't pull the trigger anymore, which is why he struggled so badly against Taylor. And that was 2005. Now you're talking about a fight in 2009, and he has aged even further since the Taylor bouts.
