Adam Pollack, hands down, for me. Primary sources are everything.

Unless he had done that after writing the heavyweights history book... Because from whatever I read by him on that epoch, it wasn't researched at all, often going as far as being too lazy to check the facts in the very books he supposedly used for his writings, misquoting the dates, etc.

"After throwing that out, Cm, ya gotta tell us who."

I suppose it won't hurt to do that. His name is John Ochs. Bet ya never heard of him, but like Steve said, you'd be amazed at the amount of knowledge concerning boxing he carries around in that noggin of his. I'm a babe in the woods compared to John, and others of his like, and have no illusions otherwise. Now boxing books, that's another story, I think I can hold my own there, but that's where it ends.

Its a pity in some ways that he is unlikley to focus on any fighters in the lower weight classes any time soon.

I haven't even read that book by him yet. I've had it for years, but just have had too many others I wanted to read first.

I suggest not to waste your time on it. Both the bare knuckle and the glove boxing epochs have books that have been better researched and better written.

There are several venisons of historians. HE is an expert on Larry Holmes and made a fine doc on him. It takes years to become a historian. If HE wants it, he can get there.

He made a doc on Holmes? Is there any way to see this?

JG,you,Burt Bienstock,Stonehands and McGrain are the best boxing historians that I've ever read simply because not a single one of you has an agenda, just a desire to discuss our great sport.I consider myself somewhat knowledgable but you 4 have forgotten more about boxing than I'll ever know.Cheers:good

Disappointed Kaplan's book listed Harry Greb dying in N.Y.C.!! Greb of course died in A.C. N.J. a place that had become his summer home.

A boxing historian rolls up his sleeves and cranks through microfilm from the newspapers covering the relevant location of the fight.

Nobody's mentioned old Jack Kincaid, Lucket Davis point man. Always a presents in the dear old NYPL. Far beyond Goldman-DeLisa or yours truly.
