Abril, by many/most accounts, won all 12 off Rios just, what, 3 or 4 fights ago? And Rios is 1-2 plus two divisions higher and a positive drug test since then.
Abril won nowhere that many rounds. His holding and running cost him the fight. There were 84 clinches by Abril. That's pathetic. The VADA test was dubious at best but the suspension and time off worked in Rios' favor. He lost to Alvarado because he went for the KO in the first 8 rounds and was gassed going into the last 4. He lost to Pacquia but went the distance. There are many boxers who have lost to Pacquia who did not go the distance.
Chaves is so far Thurmans toughest test , he held his own before getting caught . This wont be easy for Rios .
Rios has a big left hook and needs to load up on it for it to even be effective. His pressure only good when he can impose his size and strength on fighters. Chavez, if not affected by the Thurman loss, is going to win the early rounds. Rios is just too one dimensional, not that Chavez is such a great talent either. But it seems like a good fan friendly matchup between 2 punchers. Algeri-Rios is another good fight. Pure boxer vs pressure fighter.
I agree to a degree yea Bam Bam used to fight alot more intelligently at 135. Haven't really seen him at his best since the Acosta fight. Alot of switch hitting and at times had a snappy, underrated jab, but he never uses anymore. Gotten lazy. Depends too much on his chin, one of these days someone will expose him by banging that soft body of his. Juan Diaz was making a comeback would love to see Torito Diaz vs Bam Bam.
If Rios liked defense half as much as he likes cuss words, I'd give him a shot. I like Chaves in this fight.
Chaves just seems all the more tender (damn can't find the word right now). Rios has a better chin and he's good in a war. I can't see Chaves giving him too much trouble. I think Rios is going to knock him out in the late rounds, possibly 7-9. If Chaves wins though, I'd be very surprised. Hell, anything is possible in boxing.
