GGG's average fight night weight was 170. Lots of 154 pounders come in about that weight or heavier. Jermello. Munguia. Liam Smith. Clenelo was coming in as high as 172 and 174 against Trout and Angulo. GGG never looked ill on the scales Here he is weighing 159 looking very healthy This content is protected He's only come in above the MW limit four times in his entire 45 fight career and one of those times was his last fight against Clenelo up at 168, another was a catchweight bout in 2019 against Stevie Rolls so neither were actually at MW, and the other two times were early on in his career before he had to make MW and he only came in 161lbs and 161¼lbs. Fighters who are big for the weight often come in heavier or a few pounds over the limit at the start of their careers or before they make a run for a ranking or title shot. Just because fighters choose not to weight bully and fight at a weight much closer to their natural weight than many other do who rehydrate 15-20lbs or more after weigh ins doesn't mean they can't make weight for the division below their one. If GGG can look that healthy on the scales coming in a pound below the MW limit he could've definitely made 154 given how countless fighters rehydrate way more than he did after weigh ins and how drained or ill they look. The worst ones look like skeletons on crack. He looks the picture of health there. Crawford looks a lot more drained at the weigh in for Spence (his third weight) than GGG did at his first.
Canelo stood off of Floyd. GGG would have stalked him and walked him down. He’d have backed Floyd up and put him on the defensive, which would have negated Floyd’s own offence. Floyd would never have beaten him like he did Canelo. GGG would have put him in survival mode.
If he wasn’t drained, he’d have pursued him all night. Also, the version of Canelo that GGG fought, was a completely different stylistic match up to what a match up against Floyd would have been. GGG wouldn’t have been reluctant to have opened up on a WW with zero power. He’d have walked Floyd down where he’d have been willing to have taken numerous shots just to land his own. We’ve got to be realistic here, where we ask the question of: How confident and offensive minded would Floyd have been? If GGG was a healthy 154, he’d have put Floyd on the defensive and into survival mode.
How would Roy Jones have done against De La Hoya? Since we're just throwing out names of fighters who are naturally 20lbs heavier than others.
He would have been countered all night, and then he'd go into his shell like he always does. He doesn't like being embarrassed. Canelo used mediocre footwork in the first fight and went the distance. So did Daniel Jacobs. He doesn't like chasing people around and can't cut the ring off that well. Floyd would be very confident. Golovkin was a big strong guy, but he was fairly basic and easy to read for someone with Floyd's reflexes and ring IQ. The pace would be pretty normal, certainly less hectic than wild bruisers like Maidana. Golovkin was a boxer puncher and we only saw him get brave and tough with guys he knew couldn't hurt him like Brook or Monroe. He was a bully. Even if for the sake of Golovkin became uncharacteristically aggressive walking Floyd down every single round letting his hands go, I can't see him KOing Floyd at 154. Floyd may even have to take a knee, but he hears the final bell. Golovkin lacked the creative combinations to bypass his slipper philly shell guard.
You'd pick floyd no matter what, be honest. And 3G was not a big MW. No reason to suspect he'd be drained at 154.
I'd like GGG at 160. I never saw him at 154, though, and Floyd was elite there. I'd also favor Serge over GGG at 154.
Floyd would not have been confident. Don’t be silly. If Floyd had been in any way confident, he’d have pursued the fight for millions of dollars. Floyd was confident with a young 23 year old Canelo in front of him. A young, defensive counterpuncher, who stood off of him all night. GGG would never have stood off of a 5’8 WW who had zero power. He wouldn’t have been countered all night, because he’d have walked him down and backed him up. Why on earth would a MW go into a shell against a WW who couldn’t hurt him? There’s no logic to that thinking. This is why Kell Brook deserves huge credit. Kell really took it to him. He was very aggressive and offensive, where he threw and landed some great combinations. But GGG was just too strong for him. And he just stalked him all night, and ended up backing him up where he walked through his shots to land his own. It’s completely unrealistic to believe that GGG would have sat back and played chess with Floyd. He wouldn’t have. He would have aggressively pursued him at every second. You’ve just said yourself that he was confident in fighting guys who couldn’t hurt him, who he could bully. Well what do you think Floyd was? He was a 5’8 former SFW who had bad hands and zero power, who normally fought cautiously with a limited offense. It would have been a horrible stylistic match up for Floyd. I’m certain that Floyd would have survived not getting hurt and knocked out. But he’d have fought very defensively in survival mode, where he’d have had a very limited offense. There’s a reason why he only fought above WW just 3 times in his entire career.
Didn't you also say Floyd was not even a legit JrMW? Stylistically , what do you favor Floyd and Serge over 3G for? Floyd would have nothing to dissuade 3G from being the aggressor. Floyd’s not pot shotting his way to a win over someone like 3G. And Sergio didn’t exactly have a big run at 154 himself. Nothing still suggests 3G would be drained at 154.
Floyd weighed like 150-ish, right? GGG weighed 170 and didn't just hit like a powerful MW he hit extremely hard for a MW, power that Floyd has never seen or felt in his life. The closest would be Catchweight Drainelo and that's not even comparable. I can post a list as long as my arm of world champions, top contenders, and pros, including HWs, CWs, LHWs, SMWs, MWs etc. who've shared a ring with GGG who've had first-hand experience of his thunderous power and they will all tell you he's either the hardest puncher they've fought or sparred or that he hits crazy hard. Look at how quickly huge SMW David Benavidez answered the question regarding who hit him the hardest and he's sparred tons of top guys This content is protected It's not a knock on Floyd that GGG would send him to the shadow realm because no 20lb lighter fighter is taking GGG's power. He's knocked out elite world champion LHWs in the gym and most of his sparring partners have to wear body protectors to prevent their ribs from getting broken. He broke big SMW George Groves' ribs in the gym. Broke Matt Macklins in a real fight. Broke Brook's orbital socket in a real fight GGG would hurt and drop him with jabs This content is protected
