Feints, and doubling up or tripling up on jabs. Changing punch rhythms and patterns and also getting a good angle. Being significantly taller than opponent also renders the Philly shell pretty ineffective. Mayweather had so much success because he never gave up much dimensions to his opponents. Other than Pep, only 3 of his other opponents had no more than 2 inch reach advantage. Also was average height for 147.

Yes that`s why I feel Hearns would have destroyed Floyd, that`s a long right hand to counter from the philly shell.

I spar with two different guys who are both good at the shoulder roll. I have found that the best way for me to penetrate it is just with high volume punches and pressure. You need a really good gas tank to keep it up though. If someone is really good at this defense, you kind of just have to accept the fact that you’re going to land a lower percentage of punches than normal. But if you throw lots of volume, they have less opportunities to counter and will eventually start making mistakes. Plus if you stay close and apply pressure, that helps too. Overhand looping right hands can work well. Double hooks are good to use too.

I should also add that a lot of guys, especially at the lower levels, are only good with the shoulder roll against orthodox fighters. I spared one guy where I couldn’t land anything and then all of a sudden switched southpaw, and everything changed. Instead of the reactions being instinctive for him, I could tell he was having to think about what to do for a split second since everything was all of a sudden reversed. And if you have to take any time to think with the shoulder roll, you are going to get tagged and lit up. He ended up just switching to a high guard after about 30 seconds.
