What separates Mayweather from every past fighter...

Mayweather is "retired." And I think pretty soon, we're going to miss the guy. There is no way classic fans like us won't have a deep appreciation for Floyd Mayweather in 10 years. His career was just awesome.

Mayweather did something, that I've never seen another fighter do. He was 100% prepared for every single fight. There were no celebrity meltdowns, he never lost his shape, he never came into the ring unprepared. For every single fight. And knowing what we all know about boxing, this is a very rare thing.

 

I won't miss him. I really didn't take much notice at the time. His fights rarely inspired a lot of re-watching. Yeah, that might change.

I think Marciano, Hagler, Tunney, just off the top of my head, are fighters who were also 100% prepared, give or take.

As for "no celebrity meltdowns", yes, that's all good, but when you're a classless serial woman-beating "p.o.s." you're starting at the advantage of being of such low regards, normal celebrity standards don't apply.

 

No way-- most of the folks around here will just chalk it up to his relative inactivity and fantasize about how the legends of past decades would have been just as consistent if they'd fought his schedule.

In a poll a while back, the vast majority of voters thought that even notorious binge drinker & eater, notoriously-inconsistent-above-lightweight Roberto Duran would have gone undefeated for 18 years in a row against Mayweather's opponents.

Depends what you like (re)watching. I find his performances against guys like Corrales, Canelo, Guerrero, and Marquez fascinating. His defensive highlight montages are also fantastic.

Well, fighters back "then" did just that...they fought. Mayweather wouldn't have lasted in the action packed 80's and would've been booed and ridiculed if he pulled his defensive wizardry. At least someone like Whitaker was able to stand in the pocket and fight back without getting on his bike.

Celebrity meltdown? He certainly had that. The domestic violence situation and subsequent jail.

I wont miss Mayweather, his philosophy was bad for the sport. Inside the ring and outside the ring. He tries to outpoint by NOT fighting, making it a lesser mans game and taking mastery away.
Outside the ring, he cherrypicked a lot for money post-Castillo. In boxing, we want the best to fight the best, and Mayweather was a part of the problem.

Anyway, there are new up and coming stars. One of them who I hold better than a prime 130lb Mayweather in Vasyl Lomachenko, then you've got others like P4P no.1 Roman Gonzalez, Andre Ward, Gennady Golovkin, Sergey Kovalev etc. as well as a very promising crop in the amateurs.

 

I've seen every one of his fights. Like a lot of people, I didn't like his style. Not rocket science, bro. What's your point?

I never rewatch his fights, but I still miss them. Because they were such huge events. Sure, Mayweather vs Pac, out of context, would be enormously boring, and I will never watch it again. But at the time I still enjoined it, maybe not the fight in it self, but the event. Meeting up with friends, having a barbecue and a few beers and watching the fight together. Stars are good for boxing, and Mayweather, whatever else he was, was a star.

 

Anything of his over 140 isn't really worth watching.

Under 140, and that's where the magic happens.
