I love to review "Spinks-Cooney" of 1987 every now and then with my drinking buddies during the eve......... The fight itself was a crowd- pleaser......... Although I had originally picked Cooney to KO Spinks inside of 4 rds, it was obvious after a few rds that it was gonna be a rough night for Cooney....... Spinks TKO5 Cooney........ YES! Cooney was rusty, due to inactivity, but at 238 pounds and a well tanned body, I thought Cooney looked trained and ready to rumble in the summer of 1987......... SO! Aside from his personal battles with Booze and Coke after his '82 TKO loss to Larry Holmes, I still feel Cooney came to fight Spinks in good "Physical" condition...... But, what about his mental approach?? Mentally speaking, how well off was Cooney in the summer of 1987???? Therefore, who thinks Cooney was horrible in ever manner possible in 1987, and who thinks Cooney's problems were either totally physical / mental????????? MR.BILLhuh:rasta
Bill I watched this fight just the other day. Cooney had no clue what to do when he was hurt. He had no clue how to clinch or hold on to recover. He looked rusty his left hook was way off on timing. He did cut Spinks though. I have seen interviews where Cooney said he did not train for the fight because he never thought it was going to happen it was on and off again constantly. Either way Cooney had no excuse in losing to Spinks. I don't think Victor Valle was the right trainer for Cooney he should have made a change after the Holmes fight. Cooney was just not prepared to fight Spinks some of the blame goes on Cooney but some has to fall on Valle also as Cooney only fought one way and had no back up plan at all.
damn! i was just teenager during that time! i remember that fight! i was rooting for clooney the great white hope?! if i remember correctly. i think mentally he wasn't prepared! if mentally your are not prepared, your body will just obey what your mind thinks..
I just did a replay myself tonight............ I'm no homo, but I thought Cooney looked solid at 238 with a tanned coat of skin color.............. He was at his heaviest ever in the ring, but nowhere near looking like a slob...... Plus, he still had them broad / wide shoulders............ Drinking Beer and Sniffing Coke in training or not, Cooney looked pretty good physically......... He was NOT blubbery like a "Buster Douglas" or "Tony Tubbs." YES! His timing and reflexes were off / slowed....... RUST............ But he had his power still with him.......... Also, Cooney took a shitload of shots from Spinks in round 5......... Frank Cappucccino did the right thing by stopping the fight......... Peace........ MR.BILL:rasta:deal
Cooney got paid 2.5 million to Spinks' 7 million dollar take......... MR.BILL:good:bloodatsch:shock::tired
Cooney was his own worst problem. He did not stay active. But Spinks was a great fighter and his right hand almost chopped down Spinks.
